MMmm, could have been! I suppose I am just more used to it happening there with the wide variety and diversity of subjects being discussed.

I cannot see why they get so worked up over house prices....they go up, they stabilise, they come down, they go up, etc, etc, etc,

I blame it on a surplus of testosterone, or PMT in some cases, coupled with the worry of having a hefty mortgage... ;):rotfl:

If teachers are so good and worth their pay, why can nobody spell nowadays and why is English grammar taught so badly? It is a fundamental right as an English person to be taught there own language surely?

Should that not be, using "their" own language, and not using "there" own language!

If your going to start a thread about grammar and spelling, at least get the basics correct!

If you love debate, this is the right place. Some boards require a very thick skin though - for instance, the "Debate House Prices, the Economy & Recession":rotfl:
Strictly speaking, Q, this is not the right place for debate. DT and the other board you mention are.

Perhaps the thread will be moved or perhaps just left to die.

Juicyloo...your spelling seems fine, but your own grammar (in which I'm including the misuse of "there") is average at best.

What exactly is your point? Most posts on here exhibit fine spelling and grammar. And for those that don't, well, this isn't an English language forum, so it rarely makes any difference.

My younger sister is very much a product of "nowadays", and her spelling and grammar is near-perfect - taught by average teachers at an average school.

Some teaching standards are pretty low, I'd agree, but there's also the argument that spelling/grammar has become less relevant over the years, in favour of quality of expression. In informal writing, what does a few misplaced commas and full stops matter in an otherwise well-expressed piece?

Teenagers and young adults are now communicating in writing at a rate never before known. Yes, most of their scribblings (or typings!) are banal, but they're just one generation removed from a time when working class people would forego education, illiterate having left school far too early, in favour of menial jobs in which they'd never have to put pen to paper again.

I personally know at least half a dozen people in their 40s and 50s who cannot read or write - people of otherwise "normal" intelligence.
    £1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50600

HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500

    "3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600

Having read this thread carefully, i can honestly say the OP is by far the least intelligent in it, whilst claiming to be the most intelligent. :)
