The OP didn't ask for patronizing comments either - yet everybody was happy to offer them without actually proving what was wrong with the original post.0 -
No obligation surely but then why not do it? If they clearly see the mistakes?
OP was not decrying others - he/she was pointing out how inadequate language teaching has become and did not say that his/her language was great as opposed. Yet all he/she got back was personalised comments and not a single post of constructive criticism (apart from 'there' vs 'their').
Is he/she right then? Nobody can spell yet everybody is happy to criticise others?
You appear to be being obtuse, maybe even as much as the OP.
In an earlier post I volunteered that my spelling and grammar are not, by any means, perfect, but then again apart from the OP who has put him/herself "on a pedestal" by claiming that no-one can write properly any longer, I haven't criticised anyone. People who put themselves on pedastals often get knocked off.0 -
If teachers are so good and worth their pay, why can nobody spell nowadays and why is English grammar taught so badly? It is a fundamental right as an English person to be taught there own language surely

Just how I would have worded it

Oh no, I was just being curious as a non-native speaker - which I think I pointed out more than once.
Yet, you chose to get all defensive for some reason and now start calling me names - nice of you.0 -

Firstly, not everybody made patronising comments. I only posted my first comment, on this thread, this morning.
I pointed out that the OP did not offer any constructive criticism or solutions, because, in your opinion they should have done. But they didn't.
Therefore, the OP is also at fault.
Starting a thread with 'If teachers are so good and worth their pay, why can nobody spell nowadays and why is English grammar taught so badly?' is very antagonistic to anyone on the forum who is a teacher or a friend/relative of a teacher. Especially, when the person criticising them is, certainly, no better.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -

Do you regard "obtuse" as a compliment then?0 -
For the record...if I was the OP, I would've worded my query in a very different way. Not just in terms of spelling and grammar. I would have used different language and asked the question in a different way.February wins: Theatre tickets0

Strictly speaking, Q, this is not the right place for debate. DT and the other board you mention are.
Perhaps the thread will be moved or perhaps just left to die.
LOL I should have been more specific and said "mse is the right place".Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
