Me too, sorry I started a thread which has intimidated uneducated yet intelligent people, if they'd been given a chance

Did your teachers explain to you the meaning of "Those who live in glass houses, should not throw stones"?

Totally agree- I hate with a passion that my children are English as it comes but cannot do the basics- yes- before you say it- it is my shortcomings, but I cannot be everything to everyone at once.

I get CVs sent to my head office from time to time when we are recruiting new people (market research) and some graduates have no idea what a properly connected paragraph looks like, never mind fine points (so to speak) such as commas and spelling.

Abroad, each native language is taught on the basis of spelling, grammar, and even sentence analysis which provides the basis for coherent expression. It used to be the same here, so what went wrong? English is the language of Shakespeare, why does modern British education thinking assume that teaching it as the precise tool of expression it is, is unnecessary?

So many talented young people are shortchanged, and all in the name of cheap politics and whatnot.

For the first year at senior school we had English Language lessons as well as the usual English Language/ Literature lessons. I think that many private schools still do. Perhaps that needs to be rolled out to the state system?

I also got bullied because I did not speak properly (having been to a state primary school). Horrid as it was at the time, my forced change in accent has stood me in good stead. ;)

No one else is falling out Juicyloo!

If you enjoy debating I am sure that you will enjoy MSE. Maybe you just need to be aware that people are not always going to agree with you, and they will tell you if you are wrong! ;)

If you love debate, this is the right place. Some boards require a very thick skin though - for instance, the "Debate House Prices, the Economy & Recession":rotfl:
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
