How do you ensure veg are cooked in a slow cooker at the same time as the meat? We have always struggled with this.

I usually put hard veg like carrots at the bottom as veg takes longer to cook than meat. I put mushrooms at the top & sometimes add them a little later as they cook quite quickly. I've never had undercooked veg but have sometimes had soft veg but don't mind this - none of that al dente European nonsense in this house! :rotfl:

The chicken tagine was wonderful, and OH might possibly accept that food done in a slowcooker could, just could, taste ok. Wait and see, wait and see!

Bit of an odd concoction today :o
I have put a bed on sliced leeks in and then topped with 2 pork chops, some apple sauce and a sprinkle of cinnamon.............

No idea how it will taste but I am not a huge fan of pork. Just thought I would give it a go again as its been a while since i last had it and I noticed in Mr T the other day that their cheapy pork chops actually looked quite nice :rotfl:

Scotch Broth in mine today using the bones left over from a couple of lamb joints. I added sliced potatoes, 2 chopped onions, chopped carrots, marrowfat peas (soaked overnight), red lentils and barley. I also added a veg stock cube and a desert spoon of Aldi's Frence seasoning and a pinch of dried mint.

It was lovely and I have 6 further portions to freeze for taking to work.

I am now the proud owner of a slow cooker :) As a busy working mum I was finding increasingly hard to think up good meals late in the evening when I came home from work and after reading threads on here I thought it was an excellent investment. I can pop it on in the morning before I leave for work and a meal would be ready for DD (13) and DS (18) when they get home from school/college, then the rest can do for myself and DH when we get home. I will be going through this thread now to get ideas for meals, although I did buy two really nice (and cheap) Slow Cooker recipe books from town today only £1.99 each.

  • any advantage of this over this.

Also will it be big enough for the likes of brisket, lamb shoulder etc. Only feeding two people but want it to be able to fit these cuts of meat otherwise there is no point

There is £10 difference but you can cook a whole chicken in Oval but not the round one...too small if you consider putting other veg etc.
