I've got a piece of silverside that i was going to roast but wondered about putting it in the SC. Whenever i've put beef on for 8 hours it comes out a bit "dry" and grey (even tho there is liquid in with it - and veggies.) Would it be better if i put it on for 4, on high?I wanna be in the room where it happens0

I've got a ham hock, carrots, onions, potatoes and garlic in there today. Added half a can of pear cider and some veggie stock. What could possibly go wrong?
I put it on rather late, though, so will be eating dinner at 10pm at this rate. Oh well, I heard that posh folk eat late, so I'll go with that

I use my slow cooker for making casseroles and soup but OH and DS complain that sausages and meatballs have an awful paste like texture when cooked in the slow cooker.
I buy good quality 95% pork sausages and make my own meatballs with lean steak mince, does anyone else have this problem or know how I can stop this?
I do brown the sausage and meatballs before I cook them, I dont eat meat so cant comment on what they taste like
thanks
I leave my sausages in all day, 8.30 am until about 7pm or later and they don't go pasty. I brown them and then cook in with a tin of tomatoes and anything else that be thrown in.
I can see that meatballs would fall apart unless you made them double the normal size so they take a lot more cooking.
Did your OH & DS like they meals oven cooked? if so maybe try a short length and see if that helps.0 -
Update on the ham hock: it was delicious! Had plenty of meat on it, so added some more carrots and sweet potato earlier (boiled in a pan first). The ham hock cost £1.80 and will do me at least 5 dinners. Bargain! I took off most of the outer fat before cooking, so very little fat, meat fell off the bone. The dogs next door are very happy, as they got the bones.Call me what you like, I was a bit "tiddly" when I chose my username

I did a gammon shank in mine overnight to use in a chicken & ham pie. And it was delish. Plus, I've got the stock to make shank soup with.

Have been looking for a ham hock for some time now but have no idea who sells them. Can you get them from supermarkets or should we be asking the local butcher?
Thanks0
