In my slow cooker today.... part 2

Sorry to be a new-bie, but I just got my slow cooker. Made a beef stew in it yesterday, although I did the veg in a pot when I got home because I heard that the slow cooker takes all the nutrients out of it.
Anyway. How can I cook a whole chicken in it? It's a 3.3L.
I've never cooked a chicken in a slow cooker. Do I simply place it in and add some chicken stock? How much?
Thanks0 -

Not convinced it does. There seems to be a lot of conflicting info regarding this. I believe some may be lost during the cooking process (as with other methods), but as its a sealed pot, most of the nutrients should remain in the dish (rather than be lost to evaporation). It would be good to see some scientific facts regarding this, as it is something I would be interested in.
You can cook a whole chicken in it, if it fits. Some people don't add liquid, although I usually add a cm or two.0 -
Recipe?? :drool::drool::dance::D
No worries it seems a lot but its actually really easy to do. Takes about 10-15 mins to get ready then cook for aaaaaaaaaaaages but the SC does all the hard work for you :rotfl:
Ok so heres the ingredients
100g golden caster sugar
100g shredded suet
175g sultanas
175g raisins
100g currants
50g plain flour
50g fresh white breadcrumbs
25g flaked almonds
finely grated zest of one orange
half tsp cinnamon
half tsp mixed spice
half tsp freshly grated nutmeg
a small pinch of salt
2 beaten eggs
75ml brandy or rum
Method
mix all dry together, then add all wet ingredients and mix well. Grease a 2pt pudding basin (i use on with a lid but if you dont have this kind u need to do the whole putting a bit of pleated foil over top and create a string handle carry on), put ingredients in basin, cover with circle of greaseproof paper, fill slow cooker with boiling water (around half way up pudding basin) and stick in slow cooker for 8-10 hours on high.
Once its done, cool it and change the circle of greaseproof paper.
Put it in a cool dark place and feed with additional brandy/rum every fortnight until the big day
On the day reheat in SC for 4 hours on high (again with water half way up side of basin) et viola lovely pud (well we think so and this will be the 4th year in a row)Emma

I don't normally do puds, but I would love to try. Thanks for posting. :j0 -

Perhaps it's a myth? I just always heard from people that it breaks down the amino acids and enzymes etc resulting in a loss of nutrients.
I shall start googling. Thanks for the chicken advice.0 -
In mine tonight there will be a ham hock - if they will fit in the larger sc then i`ll put both the hocks in but they are so huge that i`m not sure whether or not they will fit
Elf06 - Thanks so much for the recipe :A, my Dsis has been after a tried and tested one for a while so i`ll print it out for her, we don`t usually have a pud but i`m very tempted to try now
Thanks again

Lol, don`t worry, think it would be a bit too early to have a test runalthough the recipe is now stuck to the front of my fridge
Well guess who fell asleep last night and didn`t put the slow cooker on
Thinki`ll have to be a bit more organised tonight, i was watching telly and the next thing that i know it was 2am :eek: :eek:Went straight to bed rather than mess around in the kitchen or i`d have woken up properly and never got back to sleep.
Sooooooooooooo in my slow cooker tonight wil be either one or two ham hocks depending how big they are
