The first time they didn't even deliver it to the next-door or even opposite neighbour, but to someone about 3 houses down on the other side of the road who I'd never even said hello to!

Exactly, why wouldn't they deliver to one of the houses next to me, i have lovely neighbours on both sides and opposite. Why would they deliver to a filthy barn at the end of the street? (about 10 houses far).

You need to speak to the Police. It is theft and they would be arrested. I am very sure of that. Whether they would get charged is another matter but from my experience, sufficient evidence and grounds exist to effect an immediate arrest.

I am very sure they will say it is a civil matter.

They will not arrest them, that much I do know!

    Surely this is theft?
I would without doubt ring the police.

For recovery, go to the supplier. Supplier or courier may choose to go to police, and I would leave the decision with them.

Some people, grr I'm angry for you

I think the company who you originally brought the products from should have some conditions in the order policy that say all goods are to reach you (the buyer) in perfect condition, this should be a contract between them and the delivery company they choose. These goods were not receved by you in perfect condition therefore surely you hold some grounds to return the items for refund or replace. However, when the woman signed for the package she must enter some contract with the delivery company to agree to get this to you safely - hmmm therefore in my mind, the company you purchased from must refund or replace and claim from the delivery company who in turn should call the police on this woman themselves for breaking an agreement, opening mail that's not hers, and in effect causing £600 worth of damage? That's what I think anyhow.

    Good luck :)

Citylink are clearly at fault here for leaving the parcel with someone other than yourself.

I've often got angry myself at finding that MY parcel has been left with a neighbour without my permission and thought "one of these days dear courier - that neighbour will turn out to be a thief - and then YOU are in trouble".

One blessing is that Citylink have admitted they delivered to an alternative address they werent authorised to do. So hopefully it wont prove too big a problem to get them to compensate you for the theft - they were the ones that caused it after all.

    So:
    1. I'd go to the police and report the thief.
    2. I'd write to Citylink with a copy of my order and details of what had happened due to their carelessness and requesting reimbursement of the cost of me having to re-submit my order.

If Citylink decide to cut up awkward about paying for their mistake - then I guess the next step would be an official letter from you telling them you will take them to the Small Claims Court to get them to pay you for their mistake and hopefully they wouldnt want to go that far down the road.

I guess Citylink think that neighbours wouldnt be so stupid as to steal a parcel left at their address - and havent really realised that many thieves ARE stupid - thats part of the reason they are thieves in the first place.
  • I'd try the police, nothing to lose and she should have some sort of comeuppance.

Having now read further on through thread - then perhaps it is the supplier rather than the courier that is due to compensate you. One thought though is the supplier may have some sort of time limit set after delivery of the parcel for the rightful recipient to take action in?

It might be politic though - come to think of it - for the firm that takes responsibility for compensating you (be it supplier or courier) to be the ones that set the Police onto this thief - rather than you doing it directly yourself.

The thing that always strikes me about these careless couriers is that they never seem to sit down and think that there are loads of thieves around:mad: and some poor people somewheres obviously must have them as neighbours - and just go round misdelivering our parcels right left and centre - even though it will sometimes be thieves (rather than normal decent people) that they get wrongly delivered to by the law of averages...
  • From my experience (previously had a parcel stolen in similar circumstances), the police will not deal with any complaint from you. The parcel has not been stolen from you as it has never been in your possession - it was stolen from the supplier. You need to contact the supplier and make sure they follow it up as you will not be able to so, but make sure the courier tells the correct story and admits that he left it somewhere else!
