Tagged icons on screen in Firefox

I am just getting to grips with Firefox 3. I tried this a few years ago but have forgotten how to do something. Because I have been used to IE and the ease at which I can access Favourites, (by leaving a very narrow verticle coloum of them on screen to pull out when required), I now need to remember how to have mini icons along the screen, tagged I think it is called. I seem to recall how when I first used them, I was able to remove words of description ie MSE and just show Martin's icon, this gets more visible. Can you advise please?

Unbelievable, I've sorted it.

Right, I think we can take this a bit further now.

Because in IE, invariably I clicked the yellow star and had my favourites visible to pull as and when required. Now with Firefox I missed that facility and wanted to be able to see favourites which after learning something, I now have. They are all in a bar just beneath the back button bar, but further to that, via Properties, I removed the URL but that comes visible when the curser hovers over the icon.

But with the latest info that I can indeed have my favourites/bookmarks in the traditional place, is even more inviting, not least because I have a wide screen and can afford to loose a small area, whereas the tabbed bar, is one more that decreases hight.

Currently I have both as I am experimenting. What I can't do, is to reduce the coloum to show just the icons as I've done with the tabbed bar. Over to you, can it be done?

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do but it might interest you to use this addon "All-in-One Sidebar" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1027

you may already know, but I'll mention it, if you use the F11 button, you can toggle between full screen and normal.

    Hi,

Yes I did know that thanks. As for the previous post, twice I've tried to get that to work after installing the add-on, but to no effect. I still have the icons and urls to the left. Only at the top are they icons.

Is it the "smart bookmarks bar" add on you're after?

If you have the bookmarks toolbar showing, it's so you can have just the favicons showing to save space.
