made my first sale on Amazon.....whoo hoo, been listing all day, think I have discovered its not good to list heavy books unless they are rare and selling at a premium, also not sure why when I list some books Amazon quotes a final price a £ or 2 higher (once fees etc taken) but with other 'rarer' ones it ended up quoting me less than I am even listing it for? Still cant head around how some titles can be listed way about their RRP when they are modern and not rare as far as I can tell....I wonder what would happen if I sold book for e.g. £19.99 that only has £9.99 on back, still undercutting other sellers....if I was a buyer in that situ I would be well miffed and leave bad feedback, would you?

It is a marketplace and I think many buyers only buy in one or two places and hence might not even know that a current book has lower price elsewhere. I am constantly looking to replace one of my favourite books (friends can always be relied on to keep the ones you like most ;)) and despite the RRP being £9.99 originally I have yet to encounter one under £50. Okay, so that one is a little rare in that edition but it makes the point that there are all kinds of reasons why a price finds a level. There seem to be a number of sellers who have things listed for high prices as noone else has listed an item ... if you come along and put a price of £5 on the same edition, theirs will be £4.99 within seconds. They were just trying to maximise margin. Oh and amazon don't set any of the prices the sellers do if that makes sense ;).

Grrr, bit frustrated today. I've been watching an item I found on FatFingers for the last week. Was the highest bidder until the last hour when the item went from £3 to £24! And I lost out by £1 (I'd set myself a limit on what I was prepared to go to). It just feels like a lot of time wasted.

On a more positive note, my 3 eBay items on for £20, £30 and £40 all have watchers which is good. And first lot of Lego sold last night. Although the buyer hasn't paid yet. Hoe long do you tend to leave it before thinking the sale has fallen through?

Ooh one more thing. Bit spooky. My feedback rating has suddenly gone up to 100%. It's been 96 for the last year after a problem I had resulted in a negative feedback. Now it seems to have been taken off (although the comment remains). Strange.

I'm pretty sure he started with a red paper clip and ended up with a house. I'll have to take a look.

I typed in, 'man who swapped paper clip for a house' and there is loads about it :D

I am more of a reader than a poster, but I love the chat on this thread, it really motivates me as I'm sure it does others.

When I have a low moment and don't want to write a review etc, I really have to reiterate what a previous poster said tonight about what you do now will reap you the rewards in a few days, weeks, months etc. It's so true, so keep it up everyone.

My brain has been frazzled since thr 1st Jan and I have been through loads of money making opportunities but not yet settled on one I feel comfortable or happy about so I'm still researching, but my thing will come with work.
I am ebaying lots of clutter though and with ebay and some bingo offers I am up to £360 profit at the mo, so not to be sniffed at.

Thank everyone for keeping me motivated.

Well you did the sensible thing and stuck to the limit you had set yourself ... auction fever can be a serious dent to the possibility of making any profit. It doesn't seem like time wasted, it is all part of the process ... the next time (or the one after that) you might find an even better lot that doesn't get bid up at all. As for time to pay, I wouldn't get too worried over a day. I had one took a few days this week as he hadn't used his account for a while and had moved house in the interim ... he apparently was having a freak out trying to get his new house verified by Paypal etc. so that he could complete on a couple of purchases he had made. Interesting about the feedback, they must be using a rolling time period nowadays. Good luck with the lego.

Oh, re the local pick-up listings, do you have the link as I thought I had bookmarked it but clearly haven't. I can't get Ebay advanced search to cooperate with giving me something similar (ebay used to be easier I remember ... ;)).

  • Hey Everyone, After spending the last 2 weeks trying to keep up with the thread, and convincing myself that I will get round to joining the challenge eventually, I finally today listed 2 bits on Ebay, and also spoke to a friend who has a contact who supplies market traders with goods, and hes going to introduce me this weekend. Thats it I'm up and running....sort of!

Also wanted to say this thread is great and I reckon its just what I need to keep me focussed. Everyones got loads of good ideas and its really easy to find inspiration.

So thanks everyone and please can you add me to the list when its next updated!
