anyone doing 30k miles/yr? cant get ins. below £550

Hiya,

Is anyone out there able to recommend an insurance group that is more competitive for drivers doing high miles?

Hubby does 20k personal and 10k business (not huge amounts), Swift Cover renewal quote is £558, done some research on the three main comparison sites and cant do better than £30 under this.

He's got 9yrs no claims, no points, we really need to save some money and I'm gutted I can't get it for less, esp when some MS gurus get theirs almost free!

What car is it? That will make a huge difference (performance, cost of parts/repairs, desirability), along with where you live (car crime rates). After all, if it's an Aston Martin then I think £558 sounds very good...if it's a 1.0 litre Saxo, I'd agree it's steep.
Noone can suggest an insurance company based on mileage - you'll just get a different recommendation from each response.

Main thing you can do is try all the comparison sites like confused.com, comparethemarket, moneysupermarket etc etc.

I'm guessing that if he is doing that many miles then he has a big, modern newish car.. in which case £558 for insurance over 1year and 30000 miles doesnt seem bad to me!

I find that the comparison sites don't compare well with doing your own legwork on sites which are not featured on comparison sites
    e.g.
    directline
    nationwide
    prudential
    cornhill
    tesco

You can save a bit more on quidco, but at the moment the big payers are RAC, ASDA, AVIVA etc, of which RAC is generally more expensive anyway, AVIVA is a bit expensive. but you may find 1 of them works out ok for you.

What I do is obtain dummy quotes using bogus but accurate details from a lot of insurers. That way when I finally narrow down the best price of a quidco provider, I can go from the quidco link and use my real details and not have the hassle of a quidco refusal based on a previous quote. You might also consider using a different computer in a different house for the final quidco linked deal.

I'm usually called Mr & Mrs Jones but Mr ggg kkk works just aswell
email adress is nospam@here.net or similar
I usually live at one of my neighbours houses
and I don't know what my registration number is.

BTW, I have found this year, non of quidco offers beats the quotes I got from Nationwide.

i know its not good idea to lie when it comes to insurance but i dont ever remember any insurance company asking me to read my cars or motorbikes clock.
While they dont do that in the begining, how will they prove it i have done 5 or 55 thousand miles?

You will have done X miles in Y weeks since the date of your MOT test.

On a newer car you will have done X miles since the date of first registration if owned since new.
Or X miles since date of purchase if the mileage was recorded on the V5 when sold to you.

Some of the circumstances may only allow an insurer to guess at your useage, but some of the circumstances will prove you exceeded your mileage.

V5, MOT, Service Records for a start.

Most insurance companies ask for your annual mileage. Lie about your mileage and present the insurance company with the perfect excuse to refuse your claim and cancel your policy as well. Then there are the offences of Deception and Fraud of course.

As for the OP, business use adds quite a bit to premiums.

Try Alliance & Leicester car insurance (which is provided by Equity Red Star). Both of our cars (with business use) are insured with them this year on high mileages - they beat other firms by £hundreds. No Quidco with them, but the difference was huge anyway.

Don't trust comparison sites by the way - they are ALL in it for the comission and NOT to get you the best price for car insurance. Don't click through their link or they will steal your comission!!

Def agree re the fake details to get a pricing structure, then try Quidco.

Each person is different, I personally found Eagle Star really expensive, I then changed to Norwich Union (now Aviva), really gd priced, this yr got a better deal from Zurich Connect (on quidco), when I took my policy (start of Dec), the cashback link wasn't working with Quidco, but when I rang Zurich direct they sent me a cheque to cover what the cashback was.

I'd do the comparison sites, then, AA,Direct Line, and see whos on Quidco.

Good luck, hope you find a better policy xx

LOL they wont check it your right, but when you have an accident like a total loss on a 3 year old car that has done 90k they are going to be a bit suspicious when you tell them you only do 10k a year. In all likely hood it will be just the clause they need not to pay out.

Comparison sites are ok to get a rough idea but most of them are owned by insurance companies so they can't be relied on.

Confused.com - Owned by admiral Admiral also own elephant.co.uk, Bell Direct and Diamond.
GoCompare are "independent" but have received a £30m loan from esure. If they can't pay esure back in cash, esure become a major shareholder. That's according to the Insurance Times.
Compare the Market is owned by Budget. This one is a bit naughty, as all of the brands quoted are Budget group companies - but they don't make that obvious - they also own Dial Direct, "Local Broker", ibuyeco, Quote Mart, and Junction who run the insurance arms of the Post Office, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Bradford & Bingley, Homebase and yesinsurance.com.
MoneySupermarket have just floated (in what was described as an "unfortunate" stock market debut, they failed to raise as much cash as had been hoped for, partly due to a recent Google penalty for link spamming which saw their web traffic shrink alarmingly!). As such they are independent.

So much for the main price comparison sites, what about some of the other big insurance brands?

HBOS Group owns Halifax Insurance, esure, Sheilas Wheels and First Alternative.
Royal & SunAlliance owns More Than
GroupAMA owns Carole Nash, Choice Quote, Bollington & Lark
AXA owns Swiftcover and has a share in Venture Preference. It also offers quotes as Lloyds TSB Insurance and insurance.co.uk
AON owns Firebond & Footman James
MMA owns Swinton, its4me & bullseye
    Zurich owns Endsleigh
    Fortis owns RIAS
Kwik-Fit Insurance Services owns Express Insurance
    BDML Connect owns Lancaster
Fresh Insurance owns Ladybird and First Insurance
IAG owns Hastings Direct, People's Choice, Diamond, Advantage, Open & Direct and Equity

There are loads more like this, but finally we come to

RBS Group - the Royal Bank of Scotland Group includes our old friends Direct Line, plus Churchill, Privilege, NIG as well as insurance sold branded as Tesco Insurance, Natwest, Virgin Money, MBNA, BMW Insurance, MINI Insurance, Mint, Egg, Nationwide, Age Concern, Vauxhall Insurance and several others!
