A good way to cut the cost of theatre tickets is to try for an upgrade.

Theatres would rather have the stalls full than the audience scattered throughout the auditorium. If you buy the cheapest seat in the house (yes, go for that restricted view one in the back row of the upper circle) you will often get bumped up if the theatre isn't full. Since being taught this trick by an actor friend I have used it a number of times: I've been moved to the stalls a couple of times, the dress circle often and only once have I had to sit in the seat I bought. Obviously this only works in shows that are not playing to capacity houses but any production that has half price tickets available in Leicester Square is generally a good bet, as are matinee performances.

The National Theatre is brilliant if you or a friend or family member has a disability. There is exclusive parking for blue badge holders and disabled people can get tickets for £12 (all seats) as can an accompanying person. Also staff go out of their way to ensure seats are suitable and give you the best possible seats. I can't praise them too highly!

If you're booking tickets for a London theatre / show then make sure you take a look at the theatremonkey website. It has some details of discounts, but I use it mostly for the seating plans. These tell you which are the seats to buy or avoid in each venue. :T

I'm sure many know but to me it was new. The RSC offer discounted tickets to a range of people. For my purposes, 16-25 year olds can get a ticket anywhere in the house for £5 w/no booking fee (at least if bought direct from the theatre). Limitations are 2 per booking (not hard to work around) and tickets are collected and proof provided at box office. Still, not bad for seeing Patrick Stewart back on stage in January and absolutely excellent for allowing me to pretend to my girlfriend I'm cultured and wealthy.

Here is booking link for their upcoming London season:

Oh, and seperate from the London scene, is the Grand Theater in Leeds, home of Opera North, offers seats for £10 for students. Went a week ago and enjoyed it even as a first timer. Great price to trial a new experience at. Indeed a dozen of us enjoyed it enough to book for their next work.
  • with this scheme you can volunteer to take a disabled person to the theatre / arts event, and get a free ticket yourself (might only be london)

also in london the almeida theatre has 'restricted view' tickets for £6 which are in fact pretty good seats. the theatremonkey site (see above) is also good for helping you decide whether 'restricted view' or cheap seats are a good deal or not. some theatres are much better designed than others. for example just about any seat in the olivier theatre (the main national theatre) are good as it is really well designed.

many theatres do 'pay what you can night', often on tuesdays - three that i know do this are the arcola in dalston, the battersea arts centre, and the tricycle in kilburn.

quite often the oystercard has offers on top price tickets / 2 for 1s as well, pick up a leaflet in the underground.

travelex tickets (£10) are available for national theatre and other state-subsidised theatres. need to book well in advance for popular shows. royal opera house has a lottery - i had no luck getting cheap tickets! but i have got day tickets from them before - nothing more magical than rocking up on a whim and ending up sitting way up in the gods watching swan lake for a fiver! (though this was a few years ago).

Me and my hubby discovered an amazing website:

    www.hitthetheatre.co.uk

It provides cheap West End tickets for 16 to 28 year olds to encourage younger people to visit the theatre. Tickets are up to a third of the price. We went to see "in celebration" with orlando bloom and instead of £100 we paid £33!

Definitely worth checking out. It's all legitimate and tested and tried. Enjoy :-)

You can get tickets from £25 per person, it just depends on which date and what time you go. Have a look at the availability and seating plan. Officially prices start from £ 50 on the theatre website, hitthetheatre prices start from £ 25. So really it's still half price...
  • Thanks for all of your comments on Hit The Theatre (especially Ajax).

It's interesting to read your comments.

Firstly, watch this space for a deal on Lord of the Rings (hopefully later this week).

Second, we offer a lot of shows through a third party hence the booking fees. In our defence, we do always have at least 10 shows on special offer, so if you are looking to see a show then we'll always have a special offer available to you!

Finally, although we target those aged 16-28, most of our special offers are available to anyone, so you're able to buy from us even if you're not 16-28.

    Many thanks,

    Will.
