Legally the only places that are affected by Bank or Public Holidays are Banks and certain other financial institutions who can postpone business that would have occurred on one of them to the next business day (e.g. clearing of cheques, maturity of investments etc).

Christmas Day and Good Friday have always been, in England and Wales, public holidays, all of the others are by Act of Parliament. Recent changes in legislation have removed the right to a specific day off by law and enshrined the eight days into a minimum holiday entitlement. That in itself would make the subject matter of the petition a nonsense even if it wasn't before.

The person who has started the thread is a student so obviously young and doesn't know the ways of the business world.

In short employers can choose to do what they like on any day. If they wish to close the office early for any reason they can.

Christmas Eve and New Years Eve are not bank holidays and so if an employer decides that they want their workforce to work the full day they can.

I've worked at many companies and each has their own rules.

Some force you to take the time off as the building closes from Christmas Eve to 2nd January, others force you to work full hours and others give you an hour off. It all depends on the requirements of the business.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

This is a petition you'll want to sign:

    http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/xmashols/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make Christmas Eve and New Years Eve half day bank holidays.

Many employers let employees work half-days on Christmas eve and New Years eve. Yet if employees want to take the day off then they must use up a full days of their holiday allowance. To stop this unfair practice we are asking for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve to become public holidays from 12.30pm. Of course some employers do need their employees to work these afternoons, but they will still be able to offer overtime pay or alternative time off instead.

Some employers would have handed out mince pies. I am not signing because this petition does not make provision for those who took leave to get their mince pies.

  • Other option is for companies to just stop giving half days at all. Would stop people moaning,

People who book a day off on Xmas Eve or NYE, get exactly that, a day off.

    I can't see the problem.

I didn't work either. But I'm self employed. So I didn't get paid either! My choice at the end of the day. As me Mum used to say..."Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choice"! Thats life chuck!
