Unfair Christmas Eve or New Years Eve working

Did you have to book a full day off work for Christmas Eve or New Years Eve, while the people who turned up got to go home at lunchtime? Or did you have to work late on either of those dates and delay your partying?
This is a petition you'll want to sign:
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/xmashols/
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to make Christmas Eve and New Years Eve half day bank holidays.
Many employers let employees work half-days on Christmas eve and New Years eve. Yet if employees want to take the day off then they must use up a full days of their holiday allowance. To stop this unfair practice we are asking for Christmas Eve and New Years Eve to become public holidays from 12.30pm. Of course some employers do need their employees to work these afternoons, but they will still be able to offer overtime pay or alternative time off instead.

probably one of the most stupid ideas everAlways ask ACAS0

let me elaborate, basically you don't like the fact that if you book a days holiday for this time that just maybe your employer decides to shut up early and allow the other employees off. Its tough basically
If you don't like it then why not book half day holidays instead?Always ask ACAS0 -
I can't see any justification as to why this is required to be honest, its at the managers discretion and why should business end up with the extra cost?Always ask ACAS0

Lots of employers, mine included, don't allow staff to book a half day on the days mentioned. That said, I take it on the chin and take the day off out of my leave entitlement. Re the proposed petition, far more important things going on in the world!!

i don't get why they wouldn't allow half days, its a day like any other...however the risk is you take that half day and if the boss decides to shut up shop then thats upto themAlways ask ACAS0

Ive always worked christmas eve and new years eve and the business was never closed early but then it was a supermarket. Yu take your chance that the employer doesnt shut teh place up early when you have booked the day off work. My current employer was so generous that we were told if we gave up our lunch hour we could go home at 3 o clock but we had to go to the pub for a drink as the boss would buy everyone a drink but the drink never materialised0

I used to enjoy Christmas and NY eves in the office - we all brought in mince pies, bucks fizz etc and spent most of the day eating and drinking while working. Very few people took it as annual leave. I managed about 35 people and let half leave about 1pm on Christmas Eve and the other half on NY Eve - they decided between themselves who and when, my only rule was that all jobs and phones must be covered. It always worked out well and they were all happy enough.
