  • The network driver didn't work and it stopped my keypad touch pad from working too.
Reinstalling vista again now. Going to try and speak to someone on monday.

  • Which driver did you use? It is unusual for a network driver to interfere with a touchpad!

Atheros windows 7 64bit network driver

Apparently there's a script t hat will turn it on - i'll try it as last resort.
Only thing I haven't done is an upgrade. I've been doing custom instWould I be better trying the 32 bit? I can return one of the discs as it's upopened and still sealed, and it was the shops error so wouldn't be a problem.

  • You shouldn't need to return it. A custom install should be better than an upgrade. I noticed that you said that you reinstalled Vista, then Windows 7. This should not be necessary. As long as your data is backed up, just install Windows 7 and format the hard drive.

Where did you get the driver from? There will be many different versions and I might be able to find a better one for you. As long as you have less than 4GB RAM, then I would definitely try 32-bit Windows (there is not really much benefit to 64-bit Windows in this case anyway).
  • I'm on vista again as I have some work to do for my course.
I only have 2gb ram.. I was going to put the 32 on this one but the company I ordered from sent me two lots of 64, one for this and one for the pc.
I can return it. I said I was happy with it as it would work on here but it's the wireless thing that's causing the problem.

I'm going to try an upgrade overnight as I know that takes ages, failing that I'll swap the unopened one.

Does it make a difference that it's a student one?
    I'm on Vista basic.

I found the driver on a google search. I'll try again in the morning I think, I've been doing this since about 2 o'clock this afternoon. I love the window 7 trial I had and it certainly made the laptop quicker.

Thanks for all your help (keeping me sane here)

  • The student version should make no difference at all - it the same software at a different price. An upgrade is really not worth the time - if a clean install doesn't work, an upgrade almost certainly will not and may well introduce other problems.

    Try this driver:
    http://www.atheros.cz/download.php?atheros=AR5007EG&system=4

It says Windows Vista, but it is a recent version and I have read that it works fine under Windows 7. You have to click the download link under the top driver and then wait for up to a minute before anything happens (at that point, you may need to click the bar near the top of the window if you use Internet Explorer).
  • I tried putting in the driver disc and installing the drivers after putting win7 on and it doesn't work. The disc only recognises vista, even when I tried to install manually - it said the file wasn't found that it needed.

I'm going to run the win7 disc in a bit. So I put this driver on after i've installed and hopefully all will be fine?

I tried the script just out of curiousity of course and it actually turned on the wifi without me having to touch a button.
I've downloaded the driver recomended and am going to have one last go at win7 (I hope).
    will report back soon.
