If your new iPod needs a firmware update but won't complete without a wall charger, there is a well known work-around using just the USB charger:

Plug the USB connector into the USB socket on your PC, but don't push it fully home. Just enough so that it doesn't fall out, but not so much that all the internal pins are connecting. This will fool the iPod into thinking it has a mains charge and will continue the firmware update.

It works because only the pins carrying the voltage are connecting. Worked for me last night when updating a new refurb iPod mini.

I got 2 ipod minis today as presents for relatives- bit confused over some of the above comments. They don't have mains adaptors- will they be able to start using them as supplied? Answers in simple English please- I know nothing about ipods!!

    Hi

No expert, but have bought six in last week - in non-technical speak:

first of all you load the software onto your PC; it then loads the drivers etc for your ipod; the final stage is to connect it to the mains to "flash" the software (basically complete the final stage prior to using it).

If you don't have a mains adaptor (which is the bit that fits into the plug socket and isn't supplied with some of the ipods) and connects to the ipod via the USB lead (which is supplied), then you can't complete the aforementioned process....although doubledark appears to have a way around this problem.
  • I don't understand why they would have to "flash" the firmware on the IPOD before using it ?

Surely either its the latest flash, or an old flash, why would it have "no flash program" on it at all ?

    Mark.

  • I've just read that that apparently firewire also gives enough power to do the firmware flash - phew.

  • I'm not having any luck with my refurb (30gb photo) I've tried charging it for several hours. But it doesn't even come on. No apple logo, nothing. The only slight sign of life I get from it is if I put the sync plug half in the screen sometimes lights up (plain white background), but with nothing on it.
When installing the software, the computer doesn't even notice that the ipod has been plugged in.

Anyone else had this type of problem. Sounds like i've got a faulty one.

That's a shame mate. You could try doing a reset which is hold center+menu buttons together & see what happens (hopefuly something :))

When you say you have charged it did you see the battery charging logo on the screen? It may not have lit up completely but it should still be visible.

Also when you refer to the software did you use the disc that came with it. If so try downloading the iPod updater software from http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/download/

Once this has been installed reconnected the ipod with the USB cable to your computer but try using a different USB port as this will normally force it to be redetected. It may take up to about 30 seconds but then the iPod updater software should load automatically. At this point it will tell you whether the firmware is already on the current version or if it needs updating. Note that if the update isn't available you can just select restore (as you haven't got anything on it yet) and it will update it still.

Whilst writing this I remembered that we once had to reset my girlfriends mini ipod when it wouldn't come on and have just found the page on the Apple site. Have you tried these instructions http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod/five_rs/

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Dan

Edit: Looks like bad-head-day beat me to it. Also, may seem obvious but check the hold switch hasn't been knocked to the on position.

Don't worry, you can use it straight out of the box. The software if you are connected to the internet or have the latest version will prompt you to update the iPod but you can click cancel and just start using it.

Yep, i've tried the 5 r's and when trying to charge don't even get any charging stuff on the screen. I've just got off the phone with apple tech support and they've confirmed it's a broken one, but typically, they won't actually replace items from the refurb store you can only get a refund.

They said this is because it may take several weeks for another one of the same model to come in. I said I don't mind waiting, but they wouldn't have it. A refund will be on it's way once it's been collected.

They said just to pick another up off the refurb store. Fat chance of seeing any at this price for a while though.
