I've realised it happens every time I am either in a low gear (parking/going up driveway) or sat at lights or a roundabout. I wonder if it is a clutch problem, the biting point is very high......:(
Try pulling away in a very high gear and see if the clutch slips. Or try struggling up a steep bank in a high gear to see if it slips there.
The biting point can be adjusted via the cable, so is not normally a sign in itself - especially with a new car. If you've had it for a while, and it's changed dramatically - then that indicates wear.
The fact you can smell rubber at low speed might just be due to the fact that it high speed, the smell gets blown away. Try having a sniff around your car and see where it's coming from. You might have a tyre rubbing or something else as well as the problem with your belt."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Cheers ZTD. It made the smell once on the way to court this morning - sitting at the lights, but didn't again on the journey either way. OH wonders if it is a brake or the tyre. I'll see how it goes for the rest of the day. I'll mention it when I go to pay for the other work.
Well, I went to court this morning and shook like a leaf as well as turning as scarlet as a tomato!!! God, I was terrified!! I felt like a naughty school girl sitting in the headmasters office!!!
Anyway, the stay has been lifted (Abbey didn't attend but wrote a letter basically saying they weren't that bothered either way) and the case has been listed with the others for 22 Feb. That means all three of my outstanding cases will be on the same day at the same time. The Judge has decided there are no 'meaty' test cases so he has decided to hold them all on the same day. A full court room is booked and he said it will either be a damp squib because everyone will have settled or a made scramble for seats!
The 22 February is definitely going to be a landmark day financially!!0 -
Hi OM - glad the court thing today is over. Looks like 22 Feb will be a big day for you, I'm sure it will all go to plan :j
Excuse my memory but is your new car a Vauxhall? I used to have a Vauxhall Cavalier that made a strange smell upon breaking and it turned out to be something very minor regarding the break pads so fingers crossed that yours is just a minor problem too.
Have a fab weekend :beer:Dealing with my debt and my weight

Hi PP - I used to have a Vauxhall, I now have a VW Vento.
Have a fab one yourself!0 -
Hitting AQA today and tomorrow. I'd like to be at £400 by the end of tomorrow, but that will mean doing £70 in two days. Achievable but will need a few hours work.
Determined not to go to the supermarket if I can help it before payday on Thursday. Might have to get some veg tomorrow, but I'm going to spend as little as possible.0 -
Looks like the problem with the car could wel be a split gaiter sleeve and something is getting on to the brake disc. This was mentioned on the advisory sheet on the MOT. I'll mention it when I pay for the water pump tomorrow but it could well be that I didn't need to have the work done that I did........oh well, I guess with the state the water pump was in it was better tohave it done now rather than it stop pumping and I overheat.
Need to do £35 on AQA today to hit £400.
Been full of cold over the last couple of days and i've run out of cold capsules so I think I will have to go and get some. I think that some rice, potatoes, cheese a couple of cans of tomatoes and a packet of sausages will be enough get me to payday without spending anything more. I've done a bit of a reccy of the freezer and I think those bits will definitely see me to Thursday. I've got £10 in my purse so that's plenty. I've got a load of beef skirt cooking in the slow cooker that I got reduced from Tesco. I'm going to cook that all day and useit tomorrow for a lasagne, cottage pie or a pasta dish.0 -

Is this the gaiter on the CV joint on your front wheels? If so - try to have it done as soon as you can. Otherwise dirt gets into the joint and then the whole CV joint ends up needing replacing...oakdale_minx wrote:I'll mention it when I pay for the water pump tomorrow but it could well be that I didn't need to have the work done that I did........oh well, I guess with the state the water pump was in it was better tohave it done now rather than it stop pumping and I overheat.
Sometimes its best to take the hint and replace stuff when they're breaking, and not when they've broken. Saves aggro and money.
Mind, I like the fact that it will stop pumping and you will overheat..."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Hi OM
I have just sat here all afternoon read your whole thread. I am most impressed with your focus and DFW abilities. I have slipped so far off my rocky road that I will need a map to get back.....
Reading it has been a great distraction - should have been studying as I have an assignment due in at the begining of December and I have done nothing at all towards it. So back to the books and lit search again...
Great stuff OM and keep it up - I will try and work out how to follow your diary each week.
