Hi, I'm new to the forum so, please excuse me if I'm not doing this right! I was following this thread because a friend of mine has a little dog that needs an ongoing prescription, and being a pensioner of 82 she hasn't got the £40 a month to spare that this is now costing her. I know you can get pet prescriptions filled online cheaper but she's worried that they might not be the real deal. How can I find a reputable (but money-saving) online pet prescription service for her?0

£300 per hour for surgery might be good value if you have a vet or qualified vet nurse monitoring the anaesthetic, a vet operating and one or two trained nurses helping. Dont forget the reception staff who made the appointment, any cleaners, practice admin staff. Plus rent, equipment, bank charges, VAT, hospitalisation costs post-op, materials, i/v drips, anaesthetics, business rates etc.
If it is a quick op in the back of a shed, £300 is way over the top but for complicated surgery it is fair. I don't charge £300 per hour but my building is smaller and I am not doing complicated orthopaedic surgery. I do charge over £140 per hour for consultation time for just one vet but it is only really the vets that are earning and they have to pay for everything else.
Basically what I am saying is that there are a lot of hidden costs to pay for and according to one survey, vets average a 6% - 10% profit margin. £18 - £30 per hour for the partners would seem a reasonable rate for the money and time invested in the business. I have debts of over £0.5 million which need to be paid for somehow. Price is always going to be relevant to the quality of service received back and for £300 I would expect a nice place. Clients expect more and more these days and want the fancy surgery with nice building etc. A new building will increase a practices revenue by 20 - 25% with no price change so vets will obviously improve. We don't want to be second class citizens compared to the human medical field, we want to try to keep up within reason. It is not about price but instead all about value for money. Cost is actually a minor point in the decision to treat or not - not irrelevant but less important than quality of care etc.
I could have a whole huge discussion on this but please don't assume that the price we charge by hour is the amount of money we take home. Plus if you don't like what your vet charges, go somewhere else. The expensive vets will get the hint pretty quickly, some of us like to be sensible and fair

Go to the 1st page of pets an pet care and click on a sticky at the top of the page I think it is called cheap and reliable online pets supplies and go through that thread you will find a number of people have posted things about different suppliers and they will tell you their experiences. hth's0

Why do you need a prescription. If you know what you need can,t you just buy on line. It has been a couple of years since I bought wormers on line but I never needed a prescription.
I now get my wormers from my local vet at similar price to on line so my vet not taking the mickey.0 -
depends on what wormer - some are prescription only still I believe
