  • I'd be tempted to stick with Milbemax at the next visit as they may have different schedules ie Drontal recommend worming every fortnight up until 12 weeks whereas the Milbemax schedule may be different. Once your puppy has had his/her second vaccs and has completed the Milbemax puppy worming schedule you can then choose your tablet of choice. Here's the blurb about dog drontal

Drontal does not cover lungworm which is on the increase in many areas

Once you pup has had its vacs, you should just get away with visiting the surgery and picking up the milbemax from the reception. Its a harsh vet indeed that insists in a consult for wormer

I think this would be best, that way I can be sure the dosage/frequency is exactly what she needs.

The vet mentioned that she saw only one case of lung worm in 2008 but seven cases in 2009. So as it is on the increase I think it would be wise to continue the treatments, at least until she has completed the course and in the meantime I can shop around and have it ready for her.

I think the Milbemax/Drontal debate has been covered by others....But I would like to say that if you do not think your vet is taking time to explain things to your satisfaction...then I would consider changing vets.
You will hopefully have many long happy years with your dog, and a good relationship with a vet is very important, especially if there are problems along the way.
At one practice I go to, I find the Senior vet/owner very brusque and unwilling to discuss. I am sure he is a good vet but I just do not like the way he works, whereas 'my' vet really takes time and seems to treat the animal as an individual rather than just a number. When you are paying a lot of money for consultations and healthcare you want a bit of tender loving care!
  • Hey, can I ask how old your puppy is and do you know which wormer your vet prescribed and does the puppy have worms or is it a preventative treatment?

My dog has dry eye and needs a tube of optimmune each month, which has been costing £35 a time. On top of that every 3 months I have to take him in to see the vet before they will give me a further tube. So £60 on that month.

Last week I rang up asking for a new tube. The receptionist said they had been unable to get any anywhere. Well, I was treating my dogs sore eye with golden eye ointment (which to be honest didnt seem to work too badly at £2.50 a tube) but I started browsing the net for suppliers.

The tube of ointment could be bought for as little as £16 on the net. The most expensive was £24. I rang up a few of the suppliers and though they all said the stuff was in short stocks everywhere at the moment, most did have stock.

I rang my vet and told him that one supplier had 84 tubes ready to be sent and as the receptionist had said several people were waiting for them, would he like to ring them and get some supplies. He seemed very put out. But next day I had a call from reception saying my optimmune was in at £39 this time (!!!) as they had found another vet in the next town had some. So the vet hadnt rung the supplier where he could get it for nearly half that price ???

I went to collect it and said to the girl that if I bought it on the net I could have almost 3 tubes for that price and she said we cant buy it for that. I said then why dont you change your supplier? I asked how much a prescription would cost every month and she said she thought he would charge £15!

We have a few clients who get things online then come in and point out that they can buy it from other places online and why dont we get it from those places (they accept that we cant buy in the kind of bulk that these internet companies do,which is what usually keeps the prices so low) - but I think Im right in thinking that as a business, you arent allowed to buy from a public supplier to re-sell(im sure theres a word for that, but I cant think of it at the moment!) You can buy from a supplier (ie Centaur or any other veterinary wholesaler) but not from a company who sells to the public.

Good luck with the pup - hope you have many healthy happy years together :)

My puppy is 12 weeks old, she was given milbemax and it was a standard worming procedure, she doesn't actually have worms.

i just found out that my vet charges 19.99 to write a prescription! my puppy has a monthly worm/flea/etc treament, that i have seen online for about 17 quid for 3 month - the vet wanted to charge me 36. although i don't have to pay for the 3 monthly consultation, the vet does need to see the puppy every 3 months so repeat prescription not an option. however, they did agree to lower the price to 30 quid for me when i showed them printouts of the website - so still alot, but they understood my concern. the problem is a small vert doesn't buy in bulk like a huge online company does - think local shop compared to tesco...

not all vets charge that much for prescriptions, but they are allowed to charge whatever they want. i think that rule needs to be changed.

I use a tube of optimmune a month on my dog too. I have just asked my vet for a prescription for 6 tubes, which more than covers the prescription charge (£9), although I don't expect to be charged when the vet doesn't actually have the product in the stock anyway. From my work experience at a vet's, it's not that they can't get it for that price, it's that they charge a huge mark-up on drugs, unfortunately. I like my vet but I simply can't afford to pay a 100% mark-up.
