It seems to me that Misco have the best deal for a full-size laptop:
    • Samsung R519 (1GB RAM, 160GB HDD)
    • Windows 7 Pro
    • Microsoft Office Standard 2007
    • 3 Mobile with 12 months subscription
    • bag
    • mouse
    • 3-year Anti-Virus
    • 1 year reinstatement service (theft cover)
    • 1 year tech support
    • 1 year warranty
    for the £528.

    Can any beat that?

I chose that one and can highly recommend Misco and the laptop.

I ordered it yesterday morning (you have to do it over the phone but it's free) and it arrived lunchtime today! :j DD is over the moon with it!

I think it is £50 but not all the suppliers do it.

It can probably be done cheaper yourself but I'd be wary of doing that while it is under warranty in case it voids the cover.

£50 is quite expensive - I think Crucial can do the upgrade for £35, and they wouldn't pocket the two outgoing 512MB memory cards (I think the laptop only has two slots, so you have to swap out the original memory and replace them with 2 x 2GB)..

I agree but these computers come with tech support for a year and any upgrades not carried out by the supplier may void that iyswim?

£35 isn't cheaper if the laptop later goes wrong and the customer finds they have to pay for repairs themself.

Once the year of support is up, it won't be a problem of course, but I think people need to be careful and check this out before they do anything.
  • My sis bought hers with her grant online and a day later it was delivered! She's over the moon :D

That is a fair point, but I think that computers are designed to be upgradeable, so doing upgrades is an inherent part of using them.
(Of course, it is worth reading the manual and warranty restrictions to see what they say, eg. "only use approved parts".)

    Yes, I did mean 2 x 1GB (though 2 x 2GB would be even better!).
  • does anyone know if you can you use the grant for home broadband like virgin media? or does it have to be used on mobile broadband from tmobile or 3g?
