Price of coal

I've always used logs on my open fire, but on a whim I purchased some coal from B&Q a while back and am very impressed with it compared to wood (I'm currently using a bit of both - the wood looks nice, and the coal burns hotter giving more warmth.
However, I suspect buying 10kg bags from a DIY store would work out quite expensive. I've looked online and I can get 25kg bags delivered for £11.50.
Not having anything to compare it to, does this sound expensive or about right (seems fine to me). I don't have a huge space to store it but could store 100-150kg at a time.
Thanks

Coal prices vary widely depending on where in the country you are, the quality of coal on offer and who sells it.
The cheapest will always be from a proper coal merchant - the most expensive (and often the worst quality) from a garage or retail store.
Your best bet is to get your Yellow Pages and look for local coal merchants. You'll be able to get prices from them and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised.
As a (very) rough guide, last Summer, my local coal merchant was charging £15.15 for 50kgs delivered - but it will have gone up a bit since then.
And yes, you get a lot more heat out of coal, but you will have more ashes to clear.
Hope that's some help.0 -
I buy coal regularly. 10kg bags from Tesco garage cost £4.99 but if you look around for places selling 25kg like my local independant garage does, you'll pay less.
Last bag I bought (on Wednesday) was £9.80 for 25kg.
Cheaper still is to ask a local farmer if he minds you collecting fallen trees/branches on his land - my neighbour and I regularly go out with a trailer and collect big old branches which we then cut up with a chainsaw, split into kindling with an axe etc.GREENS M'SHIP OFFER NOW CLOSED SO PLEASE DON'T ASK ME!Olympic Debt-free Challenge £2150/£11900 = 18.0%NOW INVESTIGATING AN ALTERNATIVE TO MY IVA - I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND ONE ANY MORE!0 -
I pay £15 for 50kg of anthercite via local coal merchant. If I wanted house Coal it would be £13 per 50kg, My local garage sells 25kg bags of house coal £7. So i would defo look around, we have coal merchants who do coal in pre pack bags as well and there cheaper than garages. Im in derbyshire so it might depend where you are in the country.0

I just paid £8.00 for high grade trebles housecoal 25kg, and £8.45 for 25kg smokeless "blaze" eggs. If I can get there, we have a local farm/coal merchant that does something called BLX, there own blend of various smokeless eggs, and thats £14 for a 50kg open sack. I am in Stoke on Trent, Staffs.

I've just had a horrifying conversation with my coal merchant. In October, smokeless Maxibrite was £17.65 per 50kg sack, delivered. Today's price is £20.40.
