sorry i keep the off to conserve fuel until it gets pitch black, nearly had to abandon the car due to low fuel, just managed to limp it into a petrol station and it actually stalled just as I stopped at the pump - very lucky! not many people know electrical current uses up more fuel. - heater etc. lights. ...

    You, sir, are a tool.

I agree with 90% of the replies in this thread, turn your lights on. Many a time Ive said to the missus it should be law / built in to cars that headlights are on at all times (such as in Sweden???) like Volvo's used to do

I agree, lights on in dim conditions but why do so many people drive around with headlights on bright days such that I have to drive with a dipped rear view mirror most of the time because of the glare.

Both our new car have an auto setting for headlights but they come on far far too soon and the facility is therefore useless. Perhaps this is the answer to my first paragraph!

You are joking, headlights only glare in the daylight if they are on fullbeam.
  • Firstly - totally agree with OP. What bugs me more though is fog lights in the rain - talk about dazzling, plus you just know they'll keep them on for the next 4 months.

Anyway - this thread reminded me that when my brother lived in Egypt for a bit, he discovered that at nightime the egyptians don't use their headlights at all, they just use their indicators if they can see another car so that they know where the edge of each others' cars are!!!

What really gets me are those idiots that drive their cars with just one headlight working,
when its the offside light out it creates the most dangerous thing on the road full stop.
In all fairness, it's always possible that a bulb failure has just happened (for I have been that soldier, both headlights failed leaving side and marker lights, OR full beam) and they are en route to a garage/Halfords/home.

With all lights on you're using about 100 watts - compared to the 50,000 watts you're using to drive your car along.

Lights do of course drain your battery (which has a capacity of about 1/2 a kilowatt hour, enough to keep the lights on for 5 hours or so) if you're not moving.

I have recently bought a car with this facility and I agree they come on far too early. I presume they have to be set this way to ensure there is no come back against the manufacturers if drivers just rely on the sensors rather than common sense.
