  • We aren't really well stocked because we only moved at the end of November, but thank goodness I bought a 25kg sack of spuds before Christmas. As long as we've still got power to cook we'll be okay.

Tibbie. Can you perhaps make something with spuds now, perhaps soups and then freeze them. It is important to have warming foods that are easy to reheat and that will, perhaps store in a vaccuum flask. Have you got any veg you can add to spuds and perhaps barley and maybe some lentils or split peas

This `two weeks at least` speak in the news this morning, ie 2 weeks at least of the freeze is about the media trying to forewarn without panic. The sea around our shores gets very cold in jan and feb in a normal winter. Think 2 weeks ahead at these extreme temperatures and then project the science ahead another 4 weeks at least.

Then think about pipes frozen solid, no transport of wagons to shops. You get the picture!! Ceridwen and I are of two like minds here and have been for months

  • We are ok at the mo plenty in the freezers and cupboards to last for weeks - only fresh stuff like milk, eggs, potatoes a prob by next week, got plenty of frozen meat, fish , bread etc in the freezers from Chrimbo and before, candles a plenty and if we lose gas and electric we have the camping stove and plenty of butane and will open up the fireplace if necessary.
Actually I am enjoying not having to go shopping - I really hate supermarkets
and my Bank balance is smiling :D - about time!!!!!!

    Hi Kittie:j:D

Well - I'm well-stocked up indeed with food - complete with loads of fruit in the freezer. My freezer is a modern one and could last for HOURS....if the electric went off for a while.

I used to work in the emergency call centre for the 'leccie board' and our advice to people was that the freezer would be OK for up to 12 hours providing they kept the door shut - no peeking to see how it was doing! You can also wrap a freezer up in blankets if you know the power's going to be off to insulate it.

Plinths are the moveable strips under the kitchen cupboards. Not a bad place to hide things either, I suppose. I haven`t used mine yet but never say never

Paulie`s girl, I know exactly where you are coming from re ridicule. I started a ` stockcupboard` thread here a couple of months ago and it was moved to the discussion forum. Needless to say I ended up deleting all my posts as the so called discussion was very inappropriate. I do know a lot about energy supplies etc so can give some forewarning as in the two `tougher` threads I started.

However who cares because I am having a last laugh now. I haven`t had to go near a supermarket since the freeze started and can go on for another month at least as long as I keep the fresh veg growing ala alfala sprouts.

By the way re power cuts, do a trial run in the dark and make sure the candles etc are easily available. Today I intend to fully charge up all my wind up torches, lanterns and radios
Not really a very good attitude to have is it ?

We did that in the 70's - Newspaper and cardboard can be used as a good insulation too.
Mind you if these temperatures keep up we can store everything outside!
It was minus 14 here last night:eek:

Orkney Star I don't think Kittie is laughing at the people who are having problems now in this weather, I think she's referring to all those who said things like I haven't laughed so much in ages etc etc. Some people really took the
p1$$ on that thread as if those of us who were discussing it seriously were a bunch of weirdo American survivalist types
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
