my gas supply has just changed. The flame is floppy and not so hot, so yes we are in trouble

kittie, if the calorific value of your gas supply has changed markedly, you need to get on to Trading Standards, as you're not being supplied with what you've paid for
DH works in the oil industry and we both have science PhD's if anyone is wondering about my knowledge of this subject
ETA - IIRC there are at least 2 other posters on this thread who have science PhDs in their immediate family, too

Just have to be careful that I fill my stock cupboards with healthy things, otherwise I'd resemble a pot-bellied piggy lol!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Another reason why I read more than I post, scared that someone is going to jump on me. Not nice at all.0

I remember reading somewhere that domestic gas supllies would be the last to be affected not only because of the risk of explosions but also because it would be a major exercise turning the gas back on once the pressure in the pipes dropped. And the gas certainly stayed on during the three day week (yes I am that old)
But we get a lot more electricity generation from gas now than we did then. So if scaling back industrial use isn't enough then presumably the next stage would be restricting supplies to power stations - which means power cuts.
Let's hope the market keeps responding!
I took out a fixed price deal in 2008 which lasts until 2012. Prices have dropped since then largely because of the fall in the oil price but I'm glad I didn't come out of that deal, because the oil price is back up to over $80 a barrel and if the power companies are having to buy in the spot market that would suggest that prices won't stay low - what do others think? It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

Not my cup of tea, I like the ones with the hundreds and thousands on, chewy ones but you can keep the rest.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -

Anyway - back on topic:
a thought for this icy weather re store cupboards - and its worth people checking up on those who are a bit frail and it wouldnt be wise for them to try walking to the shops (but they might be ornery enough to do so anyway.....) and offering to do their shopping online for them.
As many of us now have all-inclusive phone/broadband tariffs (ie including all the phonecalls we make - provided they are to standard numbers and dont last for more than an hour a time) - then an hour is plenty of time to hold a phone conversation with a temporarily "housebound" (or they should be for safety.....) person and run through a supermarket shopping website with them as to what goods they require and set up an account for them. There are people I know that I am severely tempted to lock indoors for their own good in this weather.....yes...dear parents...I DO mean you:D).0 -

Personally....well...I am awaiting "rationing by price" - ie the power companies increasing prices a lot ...even if only "because they can". Glad I'm on a capped rate deal myself personally....whew!0
