I have edited this post:

I do hope that many of you have planned ahead re your essential stocks. Please don`t rest on your laurels, next step is temporary blockages of energy supplies to some industries and perhaps followed by short time working. Look at the first thread ` if times get tough` as we are about to have a bit of a re-play

Yes - loads of stuff in stock, and still have veg in garden (frozen mind you). We also bought a new camping stove and cylinders in case of emergency last year but haven't needed to use it yet.

I talked my parents into an extra shop yesterday, and they have just rung to say how glad they are now the snow has come.

We won't starve for a bit, but I worry about more vulnerable people who don't have the opportunity to do the same.
  • I've had a full storecupboard for years now. Not excessive, but enough to feed us for a couple of weeks at least.

kittie - are you very isolated  shops in my part of rural Yorkshire have stayed open without trouble through the bad weather :D

    Hello Kittie:hello:
I ran my store cupboard down as we moved house from England to Scotland. The last couple of months before that i was staying up here with DD as I'm studying here, and going back down to see DH every few weeks.
Luckily we are ok now as close to shops. Feel v sorry for people who can't get out to buy food and who are running low. In this cold weather, it's important to stay warm and eat hot food, so the news about gas is a bit worrying. I've been putting on the heating for a short while in the mornings to take the chill off the flat and then we have it on later. Made good use of the oven yesterday by cooking 2 chickens and also made a big pot of soup so will be easy on the gas for cooking for the rest of this week.
    Keep warm!

    Full here too ;)

Could go a good month only needing milk . . . have tinned fruit, frozen veg, enough bread flour/yeast for probably 15-20 loaves and lots of meat in the freezer. Most bought at a good price too :D

Maybe should look into getting a cow . . . then wouldn't even need the milk! Don't care for the long life stuff, but I suppose if needs must. Hope everyone is staying warm and healthy.
  • yes, I am glad of my stock cupboard. Its 2nd nature now to stockpile cheap tins etc and I am lucky to have the space. I was only saying to OH last night how we would all perish if they didnt fill the supermarket shelves and turned off the power! I reckon I could last a few weeks though...

Kittie, what are your alternate energy plans please?

I don't hoard, nor do I find it difficult to create cheap filling meals from the average leftovers of the fridge, freezer and cupboards for quite a considerable while, without being stocked to the hilt with every sort of foodstuff. I don't think anyone's going to starve!!

Apart from people living in the few extremely remote areas of the country, I really find this thinking difficult to understand.

I've been very thankful for my store-cupboard - became ill on 3rd of december and have pretty much lived off it since then - it's getting a little low now but am planning a big shop this weekend if I can get to the city. We only have small shops here and whilst they have been open they're very expensive and limited in what they have, plus walking to them has been impossible. The weather is looking set to continue all winter - lets hope we can get out to re-stock again before we run out

Bronnie, for some of us being prepared is essential. It's a 40 mile drive one-way for me to a supermarket big enough to push a trolly around, and the road is not a main road so is low-priority on gritting. The small shops local to us are very expensive and limited in what they supply, plus walking around on this ice is dangerous - I too doubt many people will actually starve, but many will be pretty miserable just now, particularly the old and infirm. In order to have a healthy diet at a reasonable price a stock-cupboard is the best option for many of us.

My cupboards are always full so the only thing i need is milk, i'vea bottle of 5pts for emergencies, not perfect but will do, i decided this morning not to go out just for milk but to mix up a pint, dug out the plastic bottle at the back of the cupboard and it was almost empty.
I'm not as organised as i think i am. 5pts is on the list next time i'm in Asda.
