Thank goodness for a full stockcupboard

I do have store cupboards well stocked but thats beacuse i don't like going food shopping - last time I checked all the shops managed to keep their shelves full despite the weather and given that I can't get to work today I actually have more time to get to the shops if I do need anything. ASDA deliveries are also still functioning - the delivery men carried boxes up the hill to my freinds house when the couldn't get the van up!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

It's a 40 mile drive one-way for me to a supermarket big enough to push a trolly around, and the road is not a main road so is low-priority on gritting. The small shops local to us are very expensive and limited in what they supply, plus walking around on this ice is dangerous - I too doubt many people will actually starve, but many will be pretty miserable just now, particularly the old and infirm. In order to have a healthy diet at a reasonable price a stock-cupboard is the best option for many of us.

You obviously fall into my latter category! Stay warm!1 -
Yes, I guess so!!! We're very warm and cosy thankyou. I totally understand what you mean though - we lived on an island for a long time, very self-sufficiently so for us this is *city life* lol Would love a home delivery service though - that would be wonderful0

We normally keep a pretty good storecupboard but with more heavy snow forecast for tonight have got in a few extra perishables this morning. I also read about the shortage of gas supplies. We do have one of those little portable gas picnic hobs in a carrying case in the garage with a few spare cartridges if necessary and with an electric oven & microwave, we hopefully will be OK. In case of power cuts we also have candles, several wind up torches and our little ex-Woolworths wind-up lantern/radio. I'm also covering one large shrub in the garden with a big fleecey sheet so that there will be a snow free area underneath for our birds to come and feed on the fatty oats that we regularly throw out for them. Have stocked up on library books. The Scrabble & draughts are still out of the cupboard from Christmas, and the long johns, thick fleeces and woolly hats are at the ready. Wellie boots and snow shovel ready to hand in the kitchen and surplus supply of dishwasher salt for sprinkling on the doorsteps. The ground has been frozen here for two weeks but did manage to dig up a few leeks and some celeriac this morning to make soup. Just happy that we're no longer working and have nightmare commutes to face each day. Let it snow. Let it snow. Let it snow !0

I've always kept a good storecupboard and been very glad of it on many occasions because of illness, strikes and bad weather; the pavements here were covered with inches of ice for at least a week after the last wintry weather so I couldnt get to the shop even if they'd had anything worth buying which they didnt as they ran out very quickly of anything useful! I have an elderly aunt living next door and I know that from my store cupboard I can feed us both for at least 2 weeks if I have to.
I don't understand the argument that 'the shops are near so I dont need to keep a store cupboard' - when I lived in town, the stores emptied in a matter of hours at the first sign of bad weather and had nothing useful left by the time I got back from work, ditto lorry drivers' strikes, petrol shortages.etc ......... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

I was only saying to OH last night how we would all perish if they didnt fill the supermarket shelves and turned off the power! I reckon I could last a few weeks though...
Kittie, what are your alternate energy plans please?
Hi DH, we have a trangia plus fuel and a storm kettle plus lots of fuel. Candles galore, wind up radios, torches and stand up lanterns. Plus chocolates, wine and books and matches
We don`t have a lot of space but you would be surprised at how much I have managed to squirrel away here and there0 -

nor me. It is particularly dangerous just leaving my house here. A very icy slope on a private road. I hear that A and E is rather full of people who have fallen and broken limbs and hips0 -
I have a very full cupboard. I've always hoarded food. We would manage for a good couple of weeks, even if I lost all the food in the freezers. We have no shop locally, but I'm fairly sure that if it was very bad the pub would start selling it's food stock!Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

Anyway there's a Tesco Express round the corner, a big Tesco 20 mins walk away and the M5 just a bit further up the road so we aren't exactly isolated. I appreciate that some people are but assume they plan accordingly.

we have a bad build up of thick black ice all around us on the estate and no-one is moving. Some public spirited souls have managed to get cones into a few areas to warn people. Really bad here re being mobile. We had rain followed by snow on frozen ground0
