I did however make ham and potato soup with a very small gammon joint reduced in sainsbury's will do me and DS til friday when hopefully OH returns home.
Hooray for xmas part baked bread which i got ready for xmas but didn't use so am pulling them out a roll at a time and cooked them for fresh bread.
Cue three noise shakers that don't make a noise any more [that would be my spoilsport answer to that problem]
I even grow celery all year round in the greenhouse so that I can make pea soup at the drop of a hat.0 -
I just wanted to add that it is hard for some people to keep the fresh fruit and veg going. I have two good methods, apart from the frozen veg of course.
I sprout a tbs of alfalfa seeds in a sprouting jar and in just 4/5 days that jar is full to bursting. I give the seedlings a quick swill in cold water to wash off the bulk of the seed cases and I store the seedlings in a box in the fridge. They will last us 2-3 days before they are all agone. I have 2 of these jars on the go and can keep a continuous supply going. The best way to get them going fast is to soak for a few hours and then try to find a sunny spot. Luckily my draining board gets the sun in patches. I have been sprouting for 35 years and never have bad results with alfalfa and have just ordered another kg of seeds as they last and last in a cool place in a lock n lock
I already mentioned that lakeland green bags do a sterling job and can be re-used over and over again
wendyphant, pea soup is a great staple here too and I always make a big big pot full as it is so easy to reheat
The other day I soaked and cooked a whole bag of soup mix and divided it into portions for the freezer. It`s very quick to turn a good soup out of these with some chopped veg and stock or water and a stock cube. I defrost in the fridge overnight so also cutting down the energy bill for the fridge0 -
Yes my cupboards and freezer are full, and I have candles and spare batteries in the drawer.Still not bought any shopping this year !!! no need as I have so much stuff in store.Couldn't be bothered to get anymore, I won't starve thats for sure.0

I don't understand the argument that 'the shops are near so I dont need to keep a store cupboard' - when I lived in town, the stores emptied in a matter of hours at the first sign of bad weather and had nothing useful left by the time I got back from work, ditto lorry drivers' strikes, petrol shortages.etc ......
I don;t know if this is in response to my commentsTo clarify, I don;t argue that people have no need for a storecupboard.
My point was that if you have the wherewithal, space, and inclination to keep a modest store of food, then wouldn't you do so all year; not just in cases of poor weatherThat way you're covered for every eventuality (illness, weather, flooding, CBA to go shopping
etc)

I'm moving house soon so trying to eat everything in the cupboards so don't have to carry it to the new house. So there's not a lot in the cupboards! If we were snowed in (to the point where we couldn't leave the house) we'd probably have enough to last about a week, longer if it was rationed - although we'd be eating some very strange meals!
There's plenty of shops nearby so not worried. The problem would be if the gas and electric stopped working.0 -
A relative has a top job in a massive engineering company. They have been told to cut energy consumption right down because of the energy situation. The whole of europe and beyond is competing for gas just now and it is a crying shame that we in the uk can only carry an 8 day supply0

I had alreeady decided after xmas and new year that we were going ot live out of the freezer and cupboards
Have to agree with Gizmo. I'd already decided that we'd be a bit more cash conscious in the New Year - so have started shopping at Lidls and using up what is in the freezer and cupboards. We've only been back in the UK for 6 months - its amazing the stuff I've bought!
I'm using an OS way of keeping warm in this snow! I have been scrubbing the kitchen floor with a scrubbing brush and cleaning windows. The children (journey to school is not essential so I thought!) are playing on the Wii and jumping around.
Just glad I got the shovel in to the hall last night as I might have to dig my way to the freezer!! :rotfl:Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -

no, I wasn't responding to you penpen, its a comment I've seen elsewhere on the forum in the recent past and a friend said the same thing to me a couple of days ago; should have clarified that I suppose, sorry..:D... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
