We seem to be thawing a bit here too
Had another inch last night but thats what has thawed this morning.
I've still got two at home from school as school bus couldn't get here on the ice for one and the other can't go out in case he slips and breaks his rods! Don't fancy trying to get to Stanmore in this and I can imagine they're snowed under with extra work ATM.
One good thing has come out of this here as we seem to have developed our own little emergency procedure for the more vulnerable people.Lots of neighbours who haven't necessarily spoken before are looking out for others so thats really good.:D
Its also made me really think about which meals I'm making this week,to make best use of what we have in and to keep an eye on making the most from what we have..
Second nature to most O/Stylers anyway but in some ways it has made me a bit more organised..*:ojust a bit :rotfl:don't get excited now lol*
ooh yes and all bins emptied on time today well done boys!0 -
My bin hasn't been emptied for three weeks but there's still some space in it, however the recycling was a different matter (particularly after Christmas). My bottle bin was getting disgracefully full up (at least so were the neighbours' bottle bins as well so I don't look too much of a dipso!!)
We had enough of a thaw yesterday to get the car out of the side drive we take our entrance off so took all the recycling to the tip. Couldn't do that for the wheelie bin however. Hope they pick up the rubbish this week. It's all in a wheelie bin and not smelling in this weather but there are lots of rats in our area and I've had them gnaw their way through plastic bins before now - they've done that to my compost bin so I always give it a good thump on the side before I lift the lid in case there's anything in there. I only ever compost uncooked vegetable waste because of rats but you never get rid of them. At least our council allow us to use wheelie bins now. They used not to and people put black sacks out in the road then wondered why we had a problem with ratsIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

I found that too, it's a useful exercise actually.
I've been eating up the stuff DD's not so fond of, beetroot , pickles, my HM wholemeal soda brick, sorry bread and saving her the stuff she prefers like the frozen peas and sweetcorn and white sliced cotton wool, sorry bread!! It has eeked out supplies amazingly!
As OS'ers already know, pasta, stock for soup and rice can be made into delicious meals using amazingly few other ingredients. My risotto the other night was divine (thanks to the dregs of the wine bottle, butter HM chicken stock and a shave of parmesan. Move over Gordon Ramsey.
Flour and fat in stock for pastry mean a sweet pie can be improvised for dessert for next to nothing using all kinds of oddments in the cupboard.
Juggling round ingredients to make the best use of them, was going to have eggs for brekkie, then thought I'd save them for baking, so had beans on toast instead! Remembered a no-eggs fruit loaf recipe using milk instead of butter (used up some full fat UHT no one's very fond of) . Also made some scones and had them with jam. Thus saving the eggs and butter for another day and still having our cake and eating it!0 -
I always fill the kettle before bedtime anyway as I like to be able to have my morning cup of coffee as soon as possible & class kettle filling as an unacceptable delay :rotfl:
Here tooI fill the kettle, Brita Jug and Coffeemaker every night just before bed, comes from previously living where if the electric went off, so did the water (water well with 'pump' run on electric).
On our holiday before last the tap water tasted horrendous so we bought water in the large plastic jugs (dunno size). I kept 4 of those and have them filled in the workshop just in case, for things other than drinking.0 -

Bronnie's post illustrates how, with the right approach (and perhaps attitude) this cold spell does not have to become another thing to moan about!
Ooohh! You're making menow because as the girls on the fashion thread know, I do have a little grumble about winter!! I think with this sort of situation though we all have to make the best of things!!

Of course we all have a wee grumble (I have had a few!), put there is also the importance of perspective!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

maybe its time to stock the cupboards again. Especially if we are going to get heavy snow . I mean, I love the snow and playing with the grandkids in it but I don't think I will manage carrying shopping there and back without falling now . Then again, maybe it will be mild again this year .old enough for my bones to feel the cold .0

another winter nearly upon us and I won't make the mistake of letting the stores run low like I did this past February . unwell for 2 weeks before the snow, in hospital during the snow, and housebound for 2 weeks after. no milk or bread and very monotonous meals .old enough for my bones to feel the cold .0
