Reading yesterday's newspapers and it was being reported that Britain had (as at yesterday) 6 days of stored gas left
We've discussed this old chestnut before - Britain only ever has about 6 days of stored gas, as we bring most of it in from Russia and beyond  This is nothing to do with the current spell of bad weather  We won't run out, we will continue to bring in a steady supply from our suppliers abroad.
If we run out of gas within the next week, I will eat my snowman's hat :rotfl::rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
I so agree with you ceridwen
We have always had a well stocked store cupboard, because past experiences such as redundancy (4 times since we got married) or unexpected bills/repairscan crop up at any time so I keep enough in for at least 3 months.
This has got us out of trouble more times than I care to think of.
And as for the benefits minefield it can take weeks before you get anything.
I keep the freezers topped up as well as the food cupboard and I also keep a stock of washing powder, toilet rolls and toiletries etc.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

BTB we had snow here last night about another half inch
Can't wait for the American lot to be dumped on us - we usually get snow 3 weeks after they do!
So be prepared for February girls and boys :eek:Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

We've noted about the bin-emptying too.
I'm wondering when our rubbish is ever going to get taken away - and presume there is some Council edict about not going down sideroads. Its generally felt roundabouts here that the main roads are passable - but I think pretty much everyone is refusing to go down the sideroads.
Would you want a bin lorry skidding into your car or worse your house? Yes some councils have said that they won't be uplifting on untreated roads and quite rightly so. Apart from the risk to the drivers they also have to consider the risk to pedestrians and other road users. I was fortunately on Saturday that our bins were emptied but the lorry had to back into the road as there was no way they could have turned to get out again plus those bin men on foot actually getting the wheelie bins to the lorry were negotiating frozen snow that has been there for three weeks. All credit to them for uplifting our rubbish and I was pleased to have a box of shortbread to hand for them to share at their tea-break.0 -
This article makes refernece to the Crown Estate position.
As PP says there is only ever around 8 days supply of Gas stored in Britain and while it is acknowledged that this is less than ideal, the gas balancing alert is in place to ask large industrial companies to cut back on usage whenever demand is high (ie, a cold spell) to ensure that households are unnaffected and it has worked.
There are a number of scaremongering articles online about this but it really is just a non story.0 -

YIKES!!!
Just got back and my god....I never go shopping much usually have it delivered by MrT but honestly...People in Sainsbugs have gone mad!!!
Trolleys were overflowing and arguments were going on as people were being so rude and barging others around and don't get me started on the queues..
All credit to MrS,every till was open staff literally bringing out stocks all over the store and we got everything on all our lists :T:T
Ceridwen I tossed in a few large print crossword books as I passed themand got a few packs of choccie biscuits and easy microwave bits and bobs too.
I've already checked on their duvets/covers and safecall bells etc so think they're all set plus we have spares to cover most eventualities..probably won't get any snow now :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
oops spoke too soon its belting down now!!
What a nightmare, I hate crowds at the best of times but angry crowds are just dreadful. Makes me quite glad (for once) that I do most of my shopping online. The more I see of men, the more I love dogs - Madame de Sevigne0 -

Edinburgh lass, bins here were not emptied when there was very little snow on Christmas and New Years eve, the council refused to treat our roads when it's come down heavy in the last week so now it's 4 weeks. There is rubbish everywhere, stinking nappies, food waste etc under the snow all over the street where cats have been in the bags. Myself and a few neighbours have put ours in my garage, which is now full. It stinks, some of it has been in there for 4 weeks. If they haddn't just used it to get the day off on the 'Eves', they collected on previous days when it was worse, I wouldn't be bothered. Now we're looking at at least next week before they will collect. 6 weeks worth. I tried to go to the tip with a car full, it was closed, so I had to put in/take out 12 bags which didn't even cover 1/10th of it, so I've given up even trying unless I can get a van & it'll be definately open (but we'll have to wait weeks for passes) as it's made my car stink now too. We offered to put them to the end of the road where it has been treated on NY/Xmas eve and they still refused to collect.I don't think I am being unreasonable. They told us to go about our normal lives regardless of weather with additional care as appropriate but they won't. I've pulled an ambulance out this morning and countless cars this last few weeks out with my car from the side roads. Our council were given 1million to treat paths to reduce slip risks by the NHS and they haven't touched them.
One day I might be more organised...........

Well, pleased to say this phase of the "Great Freeze" (!) is all but over in our little corner.
I don't mind about the bins, agree with reasons stated earlier. My bins don't smell as of course the bin contents are frozen too. Well, except for the one with the wine bottles in, there's a definite 'bouquet' when you open that one! Less shopping means less rubbish anyway. We are managing to condense and compress what we have and keep it neat and tidy. As there are only 2 in our household, there's loads of spare capacity, but I notice even the houses with large families seem to have things under control. I could put one or 2 random bags in my bin anyway.
DD and I have survived quite easily on what we had in and TBH there's quite enough there to keep going for ages. I'd bought a Mr S huge chicken for £4.99 last Monday, cooked the breasts and made stock, still got nearly whole breast and some stock left and the legs and wings are still in the freezer with some other stuff. HM soup is such a wonderfully food too! Cheated on my no-buy challenge and bought a couple of bottles of wine (but we could've survived without it, I expect )
As soon as I realised I had only a minimum of fruit left, I started craving a juicy orange! So will stick a UHT carton or 2 of juice in the back of the cupboard for next time!
However all in all, we will carry on in the same manner. I haven't shopped properly since before Christmas, so will be getting my normal size Sainsbury's order delivered this week.
Hope those of you in harder-hit areas are managing to stay safe, warm and well-fed too!0 -
They wanted to increase gas prices too, were told they could not do so, makes you wonder if the scaremongering was so if they went up we didn't moan.

Money and environment saving!
(And before anyone calls the downfalls of real nappies, having used them for over 2 years, living in the cold, wet Northern Isles, in a normal sized house, with no tumble drier, they are pretty darn easy to use, most of the time!).
Bronnie's post illustrates how, with the right approach (and perhaps attitude) this cold spell does not have to become another thing to moan about!Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Glad to say that my recycling bin has just been emptied:T
Last time was Christmas Eve.
Will be putting my black one out tonight just in case because it is due to be picked up on Thursday but all pick up dates have been altered so our council advises us to put our bins out ready.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
