In my Tescos tonight they had nice ham (not the plastic sort as i call it) in a pack which should have been nearly £2 per pack reduced to 39p for about 100g or so. They had about 8 packs and i thought about everyone on this site and wished i had everyones knowledge so id have known whether i could freeze it or not.
As i wasnt sure i brought 2 packs as use by was 2 days later than display until. I did ask a member of staff but they werent sure either as there wasnt a sign on the pack saying safe to freeze. So can i freeze it and if so how long could it be frozen for before having to be used?0 -
Yes. You shouldn't have any problems freezing these. On Christmas Eve we were lucky enough to get fifteen bags of ham at a knock down price from the deli counter (10p each :T . I asked if they could be frozen and they said that they could. I've been using them from the freezer in the kids lunches with no problems, so they should be fine.

I freeze more or less everything...gives the kids a laugh! I just make sure I use it within 24hrs of defrosting, has saved me a fortune over the years.New Mantra: I must not visit MSE until after I've completed all my chores!!!!!0

I didn't think you could, my Mam works on a deli and was always told to advice customers that you couldn't freeze it. Well you'll upset the dogs now as it'll be going in the freezer instead of their tummies. One day I might be more organised...........

No, a work colleague told me the story about how her sister used to make her dh's sandwiches for work at the beginning of the week and put them in the freezer. He got a really bad dose of 'upset tummy' and was very ill. When they went through what he had eaten the ham was found to be the culprit. She had been doing it for ages, but that was the only possible culprit...
Best not to freeze any food that's on it's last use by date for too long, freezing doesn't keep stuff fresh forever.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

If, on the advice to freeze from staff, there is a problem, ie upset tummy. The customer could have a claim for compensation from the store. On the whole, I think they err (sp?) on the side of caution.
I also used to know someone who made a week's supply of sandwiches and froze them, including scrambled egg ones. They never had a problem.
But you are quite right, when freezing, or reusing food, you should always be careful.New Mantra: I must not visit MSE until after I've completed all my chores!!!!!0 -

Think I might try this, always find I never have enough time to make up the lunches and plan different fillings, end up with cheese everyday!0 -
I used to work with a chap whos wife gave him frozen sarnies to take to work each day. She got fed up of him eating his lunch for breakfast and buying food later on. This way he was unable to eat his lunch until it had defrosted!!!! :rotfl:
Never did him any harm.
By the way we have used ham, etc from the freezer with no problems. What's he building in there???
