LOL now McDonalds are just making it up as they go along. They would have done market research on people of the age the advert was aimed at. It obviously cant be that bad or it would have been pulled by the Advertising standards agency by now. Maybe you should contact them.

I'm sure McDonalds PR team have seen this thread as they now seem to announce the "BOB" term a few more times in the advert now!.
If the bob term is so incorrect surely the "squid" term is aswell as everyone knows a squid lives in the sea and can't be used to buy med fries!!

No, Squid has always been slang for a pound, bob is a term inherited from pre-decimilization to apply to a 5p piece and subsequently to a small amount of money, as said.

I have access to a far reaching family of all ages across the UK and no-one from the age of 7 to 15 to 80 has ever heard of a 'Bob' being some kind of new slang for a pound.

The point is the whole BOB thing is just slang same as squid. Slang can vary from county to county there is a lot of slang in London that people in the midlands would have no concept of what they are talking about and vicer versa.

You say most people you know haven't heard the phrase "bob" used to mean a pound, where as most people I know are aware of the slang word bob, i.e bet that cost a few bob (few pounds), can I borrow a couple of bob (couple of pounds).
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I think the expression has just been pinched and upgraded by the latest generation.
"Must've cost a few bob" was a common expression when I was a kid and probably meant an item that cost ten shillings or so.Considering that my wage at 17 was £7 'A few bob' was a lot of money and todays equivalent of several pounds.
The expression has just been updated thanks to inflation.Mind you why modern youth have pinched my pre decimal slang for money and not made up their own, I wouldn't know. After all my lot didn't go round talking about dubloons and pieces of eight.

    Me too! :D

Actually thinking more about 'bob', what about the saying 'as bent as a 9 bob note'?

The least 'bob' for a note when I was a kid was 20 (20 bob = a £1 note), so where does that saying come from?

I'm sure their large fries have shrunk recently! You know, they taste nothing like potato, but they're still so good!

Don't think dubloons/pieces of eight were ever the currency of England?

The biggest thing that annoys me is that the double cheese burger is £1.29 it was 99p not so long ago - thats a 30% increase. How do they justify that? (and its still on the poundsaver menu).
