In the same area you could buy this place which is an okay looking 3-bed semi for £99k.

I'd be quite happy with that as a FTBer and seems a decent price. I think any property for £15k in this day and age will be awful.

No seriously, what's wrong with this? Very nice looking place for that money.

Some people seem unwilling to travel more than 30 miliseconds from where they currently live or work, so they reckon there isnt anything even remotely affordable. Bit daft really.

I think people who have commuted in the past don't want to have to do it anymore. It's a nightmare, costs in time and a lot of money & hassle. I did it like a robot for years but now wouldn't compromise so much.

    Not that daft really.:o

I think it looks lovely. Most FTB'ers want it all right now, Athought this is on the same estate as the £16K property and may be ex LA, nothing wrong with it. Someone has taken care of it and loved it as a home.

Well debating with you's already become tiresome.

FOR EXAMPLE: I'd rather read what Hamish has to say rather than what you don't have to say. You're already a troll to me - Ciao!!!:T

It is certainly ex LA, which of course is not a problem in itself- some ex LAs go for huge amounts in villiages or quiet suburbs. I expect the price reflects the immediate local area.

I don't know the area myself, just putting 2+2 together.

I am looking for ex LA, but local knowledge is key. There are some places I would never buy, no matter how cheap.

There aren't any round here. A FTB property would presumably be affordable to FTB's.

There are some that estate agents say suitable FTB or BTL. They are having a laugh.

TR7, Cornwall, at the peak the answer to "what is the CHEAPEST/entry level, 1 bed flat" question would have been £100k. There's no work in the county really though - and most work is seasonal, so without the rich people coming in and buying up places to be used as holiday homes (for themselves or to rent out), they've dropped like a stone.

    Median wage in 2009 is £16,018 (Source: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_labour/ASHE-2009/tab7_7a.xls )

    Now, TR7, cheapest 1-bed flat: £79,950
    45 minute/30 mile radius, cheapest 1-bed flat: £69,950

    TR7 cheapest 2-bed flat: £125,000
    45 minute/30 mile radius, cheapest 2-bed flat: £85,000

    Thats nice.

So how much are these properties, and which area?

That also depends somewhat where you live, ie here in the suburbs of London, a simple 10 mile journey can take circa 30-40 mins or up to 1-1.5 hrs in rush hour! It's difficult to factor in commuting by car here, I've usually commuted for an hour ish by train. When I commuted by car for 1.5 hours each way I would leave home at 06:30!

As a single FTB in my 30's a few years ago, I couldn't afford a 1 bed flat around here on a 'normal' salary. What I want isn't relevant though, I don't have much choice!

Prices now are much lower obviously, cheapest 1 bed on Right Move today (ie all separate kitchen, living room and bedroom non high rise but typical 70's style block of flats) showing up at 150k (most 1 beds are more than this however, tend to be 160-170k). This is an ok but not great area of London.
