  • I was just off to B&Q to empty my pockets on some more Weedkiller @ £20 -30 quid a pop and to my good fortune stumbled onto this site.
    Excellent comments & tips.

You can get concentrated glyphosate from ebay and online shops, at significantly lower prices than Homebase et al. 1L of Rosate 36, which will treat many acres, or about £13 including P&P. But handle it with great care, and of course keep it away from children and idiots as it is poisonous when undiluted. I bought 1L from a Lincolnshire supplier on ebay, and it arrived the next day.

Just curious, but if hot water/brown (I assume brown means malt) vinegar works why is weedkiller available at all?

Because it makes a profit for the manufacturors!
I'd never heard of the vinegar treatment but have used salt to get rid of dandelians.

While there may be some truth in this, systemic weedkillers like RoundUp (glyphosate) will be much more effective against perennial weeds such as couch grass and bindweed which develop huge underground networks of rhizomes which aren't likely to be affected by vinegar on the above-ground parts. You also need to apply a lot, lot less to kill a plant, and it doesn't acidify the soil like vinegar. That said, it sounds as if vinegar works wonders on isolated weeds and it's certainly going to have less environmental impact than glyphosate.

  • Interesting thread, where is the cheapest place to buy brown vinegar?

How do heat it? Saupan or old kettle? Do your just pour on? Spray on?

    Thanks

No, it's because systemic weedkillers such as glyphosate work. Vinegar will not kill weeds with a strong root system such as bind weed.

But, if anyone wants to try, you can buy bottles of malt vinegar from Sainsburys for an absurd price, something like 17p last time I looked. Maybe Tesco et al do similar. I suspect it breaks down in the soil and probably acts as a weak fertiliser, but that is a guess.

  • when you say brown vinegar, do you mean normal malt vinegar that you use on the dinner table?
