OK, I have filed a dispute with Paypal. During the filing it showed that the seller has entered a tracking number (PBAA8236540001) but this is not recognised by the RM tracking system.

The seller has responded to the dispute with "It was sent standard parcels, it is non track able service, I have already sent proof of postage".

Where do I go from here?

In the first instance email paypal or even better call them and explain that tracking number is fake. They often decide for the buyer immediately then as they don't like sellers trying to get clever. However that might be a bit harsh as phone is probably still on its way.

Maybe wait until your post on Monday and then phone paypa if phone hasn't arrived, or alternatively wait the 10 days for paypal to find for you. However, watch paypal carefully, they do odd things sometimes, do not let them think that tracking number is real and close the dispute.

Proof of postage is not proof of receipt. The seller is obviously a complete and utter numpty to send anything of that value standard parcels. Charging £7 the seller should have at the very worst send it 1st class recorded. Paypal should be on your side as the item was sent via a non trackable postage service. As already stated, phone them and make them aware that the tracking number is fake, do it, do it now if you haven't already!!!

I will NEVER buy an item of any value if the seller only lists it as being send 1 class standard, 2nd class standard or standard parcels. If the item is listed as being sent via 1st or 2nd class recorded I will still avoid it if the item is worth more than the insurance covers it for. It means the seller loses out, but it also means you do lose out on some bargains, but at the end of the day I'd rather have the peace of mind that if for some reason I don't get my item that at least a claim can be made for the cost of the item. Thankfully this has never happened to me...yet lol, fingers crossed it never will. Threaten the seller with the small claims court, it may kick them into sorting it out a bit quicker. At the end of the day though it's the seller that's in the wrong for not using correct postal option such as special delivery.

    Good luck with it.
  • Just out of interest, to the buyers who open a not received dispute and get a refund what do you do if the item then turns up?

Personally if a seller sends an item by a postal service that doesn't cover them for the full cost of the item should it go missing, it's of no concern to me. I can get my money back from paypal and they will have to suffer a loss for under insuring.

Not being funny, but if you dont buy on 1st or 2nd postage and generally avoid recorded, when DO you buy?

I send my items tracked, there is no Ebay 'pre listed' post option for this so I call it 'sellers standard rate'.

Donate the item to the post office?
Give the postman the money as a christmas tip?

Yes there is if using Royal mail the ebay selling format as well as Auctiva and turbolister have an option to use 1st or 2nd class recorded, or special. My phones are listed with one option only, special delivery and with no overseas options and no other postal options at all.

Most buyers would repay the seller, or if they no longer want the item return it tracked at their own expense.
