oh mark, it's horrible having work done in the kitchen isn't it? I have to confess when we had an extension and re did the kitchen we moved out to a near by holiday let for a couple of weeks! not a very frugal way of doing it but the kids were tiny and it helped me keep my sanity.

so I will be looking with interest at what you manage to feed the family! whatever you manage it will be much cheaper than renting a cottage elsewhere.

We lived for 4 months without a kitchen. Sanity was saved by a slow cooker (runs off any electric socket) and a camping gas burner, which we used for the veg steamer. If you have a microwave as well you can do pretty much anything.

Camping gas burners like this http://www.yeomansoutdoors.co.uk/products/stoves-heaters/camping-stoves/campingaz-bistro-00000.aspx or this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Camping-Cooker-Cartridges-Refills/dp/B000RHV3MU run off small cylinders and can be used on a table top.

    Good luck!

thanks all - first supper was a nightmare - its cold, everything is out of order but everything is ahead of schedule

    Mon 1st March -

    Breakfast : Cereal 6/6
    Lunch : Sandwiches & Apple - 6/6
    Supper : OP+OH - one Lidl curry with extra rice = £1.20
    Kids - Lidl £1.79 pizza four ways = 45p + school made muffins (0p)
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

I havent read all the thread so I could be out of step but if I'm reading this right today your children had cereal for breakfast, sarnies and an apple for lunch and a quarter pizza and muffins for supper. Did they eat anything else? I dont know the ages but I'm wondering if the quantity and quality of food eaten today is enough for growing children?

    Good morning Mark!

I had some success with a lasagne which I think would feed all your 6. But probably not while your kitchen is out of action :( but will happily pop recipe up here, in case it's useful

It's 44p per serving, so might be tricky to find a 6p side vegetable, but maybe with one of your whoopsed veg deals you'll manage it :)

Keep up the good work :) we believe in you and I'm so impressed you are stll keeping a log with no kitchen, so many folk would just use it as an excuse to eat takeaway all the time :rotfl:

    Love from Weezl :D

I'll assist you in this, this thread is for meals only. Snacks come from a different budget. Mark had a February Grocery budget of £450. This is £16/day total spend, compared to the 50p/meal for 6, of £9/day for meals only. Hope this clarifies things for you :D

    sorry Mark,

I've realised my post earlier about a lasagne recipe was deleted because it links wrongly to my blog :o. I'll try again. I've done a frugalised lasagne recipe which is lasagne with a garlic and mustard sauce and it would work out as 44p per person, leaving you with 6p for a side dish of veg. So the recipe is on my blog (my MSE homepage if you click my name) if you'd find it helpful. Hope that helps and well done for managing everything without a kitchen. :)

Hope I've referenced that right, I'm not great at detail at the mo!

    hi all

    complete lack of will today

    BREAKFAST 6/6
Lunch - School Dinners + Tesco Sandwich - Only OH Virtuous 1/6
    Supper - 6x fish pie + peas (shopbought) 0/6

    7/18

I will total up at the end of the kitchen works - too de[ressing at the moment

Thanks weezly for your link - but we are just so squashed that we are going to do what it takes to survive - whilst not being extravagant

oh poor you Mark, I quite understand.

We always have takeaway when doing up the house.

You sound a bit discouraged. Please don't be! Your challenge is amazing and you are inspiring lots of readers :)

Shall we post other ideas for when you have the new kitchen or will you find it a bit discouraging until you get there?

    Weezl :)

This post now looks a bit odd :o :

It was edited (not by me) but was originally a response to this post:

The OP declined to answer, in a post which has also been deleted, so I was aiming to assist PTT.

    Apologies for any confusion ;)
