Burlesque Babe bid to stay debt free in 2010

They sound like good resolutions BB, and I am glad to see some in there for looking after yourself. I dont have a driving license and always use the excuse that we couldnt afford to run another car anyway but if truth be told I am terrified of the things, so having driving lessons is something I want to do this year..xxxxxPay Debt by Xmas 16 - 0/12000

Frosty one here today. Glad I left the car on the road. I have a very steep and narrow driveway and where water from the road higher than me runs down my drive (carp storm drains) there's a 2 foot wide sold sheet of ice on one side of the drive.
Want to have a pootle round a few local garages today and just have a sit in a few different models of cars so I can continue to piece together my thoughts on what I'll be replacing my old car with. I've realised I need a fairly narrow car. It's a bit tight in the hire car at the bottom of the drive - the mirrors almost clip the wall and it turns out its 4 inches wider than my old Honda. So, width now plays a part in my hunt (doesn't it always)
I should hear about a Polo for sale with someone at work early next week. It's cheap for the plate - someone's MIL who has had to give up driving. MOT is due early Feb which is the pain and he is going to see how much tax is left on it for me this weekend. However, it's P reg and only £495. There's an S reg. one for sale locally in a garage with a similar mileage for 2k!
Continued to de-Christmas the houseDid cards and advent calendars yesterday and did the nativity today. Will do the tree tomorrow so it doesn't feel too bare too quickly.
Re-insured Charlie. Because he turned 8 last year premiums have gone through the roof. I was considering self-insurance but thought that if something like arthritis suddenly appears it might end up really dear. I could get emergency cover if he was injured accidentally for £18 but didn't see the point of that, cheapest I could get was to re-join Churchill (who I only left on New Years Eve!) for £24. Bizarrely still a saving though because they wanted a shade under £30 on the renewal and were adamant they couldn't improve on the price."Stay Wonky":D

I did some New Year resolutions last night on the daily chat thread. I'll copy them to here......this diary is part of one of them
- Have a manicure each month. I never ever do any beauty stuff. I have nails which grow long but split and are all different lengths. I want to get my nails nice and just treat myself once a month. I also noticed my hands seem to be aging quickly so I am going to spend however much a manicure costs to get my hands lovely and my nails nice looking
- Not to be in debt at the end of 2010. Weird one perhaps because I'm (currently!) debt free but the car situation is almost 100% going to cause some debt level and I don't want it to linger - and grow, especially if my afternoon job contract ends.
- Not to let my driving fear get any worse, and if possible to grit my teeth and set myself a target of, say, being able to drive 10 miles in any 1 direction by the end of the year.
- to be in a permanent full time job. At the moment, mornings are permanent and afternoon is contract. Then teaching etc on top. I want to get a job which is permanent, even if if means leaving here, I'm weary of all the different jobs and the uncertainty of each month.
- to lose 52 pounds and to have kept it off. I need to lose double that (and some) but that's just a huge mountain so I'm going to try for 1 pound a week totalling a near 4 stone loss over the year.
- sort out relationship. Nuff said really.
- stop being so inflexible for routine. It's almost the last remaining stuff in my head from the Cruella episode and I need to stop being so OCD about routine etc and have a bit of impulsiveness in my life every now and again.
- say 'yes' to opportunities life throws and just seeing where it goes, I did that a couple of months ago and I remembered life was even better if you just take a chance every now and again to the odd curved ball which comes your way
Hi BB,
Just stepping out of Lurkedom to wish you a Happy Shiney New Diary !
Really good to see how far you've come since the Cruella period - you've done fantastically well gal, and I know you'll make even better progress this year with your determination.
You've got some great resolutions for 2010, the say "yes" to opportunities is also one of mine as such. Looking back over last year, I feel I let some get away from me by not having the courage to follow my heart instead of my head! Sometimes you do just have to go for it. I've decided that if butterflies are flipping inside me at an opportunity / choice - it's likely to mean that it's something "important" enough to me to warrant taking the chance.
The one about the work side, is also one that's been causing me some serious deliberations. A friendly neighbour said to me when we were talking about it - that sometimes (and maybe more so in the current climate ?) having one full time job is not necessarily as "safe" as it seems.
If you lose it for any reason - you've lost your entire income in one hit. Whereas, if you go for full time employment but with two different companies, you've kind of spread the risk - if one of them goes, at least you still have income from the other to keep you going. After myself losing a newly found position due to cutbacks last year (still within the 6 month probabtionary period) - It's something that I've decided to take under serious consideration. Think it's what they call "portfolio" working :rotfl:
Anyhow, just wishing you all the best for the 2010 !

portfolio working - love it :T
My morning job and afternoon job (and teaching !) are with the same organisation - I just move desks at lunchtime:rotfl:
When I took on the afternoon job it was (in the interview) going to be an open ended contract but they had to put a date so initially put 31 Dec 2009  and I've asked about it and have been verbally told I have a job still as of 1 Jan! Must push them for a new contract though - apparently it will only be until March/April for the time being and I need to make sure I'm as ready as possible if it doesn't go on past that.
I can't wait until July when my fixed rate ends - I should save around £150 per month. As long as the rate doesn't rocket over the coming months _pale_"Stay Wonky":D

Treated myself to a Wii game - Biggest Loser - £9.99 with free delivery (I think I have Sammy to blame as she posted a link!). I like the TV show (well the early ones, I find them a bit samey now) and I paid with quidco money so it was effectively free
Thought I'd make baby steps towards getting some weight off with getting the game - the diet bit is still in the planning stage.........slurps mead........"Stay Wonky":D

I think there is a lot to be said for 'portfolio' working. It def helps in Cruella situations & in times when a job is at risk. I teach full time and can't manage anything more due to illness. I do comps for luxuries/pressies etc, but although I won loads last year it wouldn't pay the bills.
My diet is still in planning stage too, but I have deadline of Monday.
I like the manicure idea. I always make altruistic/ earth mummy (been a single mum for 8 years) kind of resolutions. This year I am going for glam.0
