Therefore we've weighed it up and are wanting to go to the West rim instead of the south rim. This is due to it being nearer, the fact that it'll be a big drive to the south rim and the fact that we want to go out at night.
I've looked at the map, and I think I'd rather tackle it by doing the lake mead, hoover dam and route 66 ventures on the way there, so all the stopping is doing in the morning / midday so we know how much time we can spend in the west rim.
I selected Kingman as the route 66 turn off point and is seems the easiest to divert you back on the right road to take you North to the canyon. Is there much to do in kingman? Might get a bit to eat there if there is. Also, are there route 66 shops like in seligman?
Is a diversion for a quick 10 - 15 mins at the hoover dam and lake mead feasable?
Thought I'd add a few comments, as we went (drove) to both parts of the GC on our honeymoon 3 years ago:
* The South Rim is definitely better for views and you can certainly get closer to the rim (safely)
* If it's still the same, the last bit (14 miles ?) of the road to the West Rim is shocking - unpaved road so your car insurance will be void if anything happens (I didn't know this when we went)
* I would not be surprised if the journey from Kingman to WR takes almost as long as from Kingman to SR, so you probably won't save much time by going to WR
* You will be driving over Hoover Dam, so no diversion (unless you want to get out for some photos) - probably best to do this on the way out as it should be quieter around 8am
* Don't worry too much about getting back to Vegas for 10pm, you'll have plenty of time to party
If it was me, I know it's a fair trek, but I'd make the journey to the South Rim.
Hope I've managed to persuade you ! Also, have you thought about picking up the car the day before, so you can set off a bit earlier ? Depending on your drop-off time when you take the car back, it may not cost any extra.0 -
JuneHi guys
Been a lurker on this forum for a while now in the hopes of picking up some tips and deals prior to my trip to celebrate my 30th with the lads in November. We fly out on the 10th with Virgin and are looking to stay somewhere from the 10th - 14th on strip, then head out to the Canyon for a night at the Red Feather Lodge and then back to Vegas for two nights before flying home.
Although there are a lot of deals about at the moment - I'm struggling to find anything for the first part of the trip. As it falls over the weekend the prices are fine for the first two nights and then sky rocket completely! We were hopeful of staying somewhere half decent but I'm struggling. Is it because I'm trying to book too early or am I just not looking in the right places?! Ideally we'd like to be down in the NYNY, MGM et al area but can't find any good deals.
Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
November 11th is a public holiday - Veterans Day, so prices may go up around that weekend0 -

The Twitter deals are usually more expensive
If you go to the MGM website and click the 3 day sale, the August prices are a lot cheaper than the Twitter 3 day sale

Here's the proposed outbound map:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=MGM+Grand+Hotel,+Las+Vegas,+Nevada,+USA&daddr=KINGMAN+airport,+Kingman,+AZ,+United+States+to:Grand+Canyon+Skywalk,+AZ,+United+States&geocode=FUzgJgIdFKci-SkF9to_y8XIgDEQ9ohSSiXFRA%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=35.82004,-114.491272&sspn=1.311725,2.90863&ie=UTF8&ll=35.316806,-113.36792&spn=0.330004,0.727158&z=11
timgtong is right...change your end destination to the south rim instead of Kingman then West Rim.
The trip is shorter, timewise, though quite a lot more miles (about 90, I think)...probably due in no small part to the horrible road the last 14 miles to the west rim . Plus the drive from Kingman to Seligman on Route 66 only adds about 20 minutes to the journey (we've done it, though in reverse - GC to Kingman via Seligman on Rte 66)...stop at the Snow Cap in Seligman for a snack - it's like no other place I've ever been.
Go early in the trip when you're jetlagged and up really, really early.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
MayJust arrived in New York after spending 11 fabulous days in Las Vegas. When we arrive back in the UK on Wednesday I will post a more thorough trip report for anyone who is interested!
We both loved Vegas and would like to go again next year before we settle down to have kiddies!0 -
MayGlad you had a good time and it lived up to your expectations. Looking forward to the trip report!0
