I would just e-mail back and say that you hadn't realised that it had said Special Delivery and obviously Special Delivery would have cost a lot more than the £2.00 charged.

If it was me I would refund the postage cost and apologise and put it down to experience or risk a neg, how much feedback do you have? I have a neg on one of my Ebay accounts which was very unfair but as I have over 2000 feedback it didn't make much difference to my score.

I've left a very courteous apology explaining how I am very sorry and that it was a genuine mistake (:o) and explaining how it would have been financially impossible to send it special delivery at that price (item + P&P + Paypal fees + Ebay fees = net loss to me) as proof to show that I wasn't trying to diddle her, that it was my first such mistake and that it will serve as a timely reminder to be more careful in the future. Hope that sorts it out.

Received a very nice e-mail back saying that it was fine and not to stress, it's just that the buyer was confused. Positive e-mail received for being a 'nice, genuine seller' and all's well that ends well, although I will be triple-checking listings from now on in as I might have not been so lucky and have accidentally done it to someone who would happily kick up a nasty stink over that or something similar.

    Phew! Time for bed, methinks!

Thanks for the advice, guys. It was appreciated. :T :D

    Hey all

    Just a quick question really.

I have noticed a lot of you are seliing stock and have mentioned business accounts. Should you register to pay tax as a proper business straight of our is there an amount you can earn before claiming it as income?

We were on a website and saw some good bits i thought we could make a bit of money on with ebay. We have purchased about 60 low priced items. Each we make about a pound on each item after all fees and postage. We are selling them on our personal account along with all the items i am selling from home. We have only sold about 8 of the stock items so i would imagine it is okay not to claim as an extra income!!. But once i have finished decluttering and selling.....i am pretty close.......i want to start buying in a bit of stock to make a bit of money. Makybe only to make like an extra £50 to £100 a month.

Is there a certain point where you have to let the inland revenue know?
Can you register for an ebay business account if you are not a registered business?

Sorry if they seem stupid questions i am just so unsure of how it works with inland revenue. I don't want to be selling items and then get into trouble. I work a part time job around my children and this would just be a little extra holiday money.

    Thanks in advance

As soon as you buy to resell you must register with HMRC, there used to be a 3 month grace but no longer. Phone them up, I'll look for the phone number in a minute, tell them you want to register and confirm that in writing. Then the easiest way is to just do part acounts for this year (from now to April 5th 2010) and add that to your tax return. If you have unused allowances then you pay no tax anyway.

You must also change your account on ebay to a business one, that is quite important, you must then show your name and address either in the auction itself or on your about me page. You then become liable for all returns and suchlike under the distance selling regulations.

    Some useful info here:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/iwtregister-as-self-employed.htm

You can telephone the Newly Self-employed Helpline on 0845 915 4515

Don't forget though to kepe all your receipts for a minimum of 6 years in case of an audit. Also keep all your COPs and other business expense details like stationery, ink etc,
