http://www.tdkproperty.com/property.php?id=40 Its hard to imagine what could fit in that space but I am sure it will be suitable for some business

Maybe that's where the cash machine will be? Hard to decide how big that unit is as it was really just a cordened off area of the main store so what access is there to storage etc?
  • Hiya,

I only just found out today from my neighbour about the area on the Castlereagh Road that is going to apparently be a Tesco's superstore. Seems abit close to both Cregagh & Connswater Tesco's if you ask me but I'm wondering if anyone can give me anymore information about this or guide me in the right direction? It's practically opposite my house!!

    Thanks

  • What more did you want to know, gillykms?
  • I am a Castlereagh Road resident and I welcome the idea of a Tesco superstore being built on the old loop mill site.

In regard to the concerns raised by gillykms, common sense would suggest that the staff at the Cregagh Road branch of Tesco’s will almost certainly be moved to the bigger store once it’s up and running and their building then sold on to someone else; while Connswater will continue to thrive as it serves a much bigger catchment area than either Cregagh Road does or Castlereagh Road will.

A Tesco superstore on the Castlereagh Road will bring cheaper shopping within the reach of people like myself who can’t afford to run a car and who thus inevitably end up paying more for everything we buy in the corner shops. It will also get rid of that eyesore of a building which has been a blot on the landscape for many years now.

Rather a Tesco store, I say, than yet another block of bland apartments or somewhere where loud music and drunken brawls would prevail.

PS - As I was walking past the site this afternoon I happened to notice several workmen and a large JCB there, so hopefully it won't be too long before the store is up and running!!
  • I was just wondering a few things -

Has the planning application been approved & work is commencing?

What is the time scale of the project?

Where are the main entrances & exits due to be? My only concern would be the increase of traffic to the area and how this would be managed. Traffic builds up quite a bit on this part of the road already. Also relating to this how many parking spaces will be provided?

Will it be a 24 hour store? Is there a petrol station planned? Any other buildings/businesses or is it solely just for Tesco's?

Most of the shops on the Castlereagh Road have closed down. What are everyones thoughts on whether it will close down the remaining few left or encourage more businesses to open in the area?

Maybe this is all common knowledge it's just I'm new to the area & only found out about it!

    Thanks

If these matters are of such major importance to you, gillykms, then you could speak to one of your local councillors or contact your local planning office. I've no doubt they could answer all your queries. Alternatively you could visit the site and speak to some of the people there. Chances are there's some form of sign or architect drawing on display somewhere on the site.

However if there are workmen and JCB's on the site then it should be pretty obvious to all concerned that planning permission has been granted and work has already started or will start shortly.

Personally though, I totally agree with VirgoGirl, I wholeheartedly welcome the store. Not only will it help energise the Castlereagh Road area, but it will bring a much needed jobs boost to this side of the town - and that's something any local councillor will be only too glad to see.
  • Thanks for your thoughts. I emailed the planning office yesterday so hopefully they will get back to me.

I am also pleased to hear the area is being regenerated. Hopefully that will also boost house prices in the area.

  • As houses with such facilities near by are valued at more than a house without? The usual expectation of estate agents is that better local facilities including large nearby stores, are a big positive.

Unless of course the supermarket is a massive ugly structure right on your doorstep in which case it can lower the value of your house.

Estate agents lost touch with reality a LONG time ago. Every house is 'stunning' or 'a must-view', every area 'highly sought after' or up and coming'. :rotfl:

Can't see a new Tesco doing anything to reverse the downward trend in house prices in Belfast or NI generally. And you seem concerned that it may make the area less attractive to live in (quoted from your post above: My only concern would be the increase of traffic to the area and how this would be managed. Traffic builds up quite a bit on this part of the road already).

Supermarkets are massive ugly structures, I would hate to be living right beside/opposite one. Look at the most expensive areas of Belfast - Stranmillis/Malone. No supermarkets there! And I suspect that Tesco would be sent packing if they tried to build a supermarket in that area.

So... I assume that you did not contact the planning service to congratulate them on their decision! You sound concerned, and rightly so - if you had been aware of this, it may have affected your decision to buy in that location (sorry if I am making assumptions).

Out of interest, why do (some) people think that rising food/oil/clothes prices are a BAD thing, but rising property prices are a GOOD thing??? I've never understood it. What is your view?
