Gosh calm down! I took part in the protest against the closure of Belmont Church Road Post office and it was attended by over 200 people, the majority of whom were elderly, living in the Wandsworth area, or who had very small or large numbers of children. This post office was a thriving hub of this community - I wont go over all that again - my point was simply that gradually local services seem to be being whittled away, leaving fabulous services for people with cars, and very little for the elderly, families, those with mobility issues, or just those who would rather chat to local workers and fellow members of a community than stand in never ending queues in characterless megastores.
Incidentally - the strength of feeling of local people at that end of the Belmont Road was strongly demonstrated when the Belmont Tower introduced their monthly market and fair in november 2009 - the greengrocers and other food producing stalls were FANTASTIC (and the crafters too of course!!) and the whole event was hugely well supported. Community Spirit needs places to grow - not local stores and services removed.
There - rant over!!Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T0 -
I do agree with some of your points Supermum, I drive through Belmont all the time and wife and I both agree the loss of Tesco and indeed the newsagents at the traffic lights and others is taking away from the way the place was
Wife mentioned she heard Spar or Centra would open up in one of the units on the other side where a kitchen place was or somethingNorn Iron Club Member #64

So we have next to no reliable buses up that road, no post office on Belmont Church Road and now no grocery store either? Perhaps we should all move somewhere else? I just don't get it.
Is Tesco cregagh closing.? That's my local! Arg! I never hear about this stuff. I obviously need to keep my eyes more open (or ears...)A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

A tesco insider (someone who works in another store) has told me that they are closing due to increased rent but will be back in 12months when they can legally call it a Tesco Express store and charge higher prices than the supermarket stores!"Well, we are a Christian country, it is an important part of our make-up and I don't see any reason to change." I was in the greengrocer on the Belmont road last week and they told me that a Mace is going to open up in the space left by the Tescos. Frankly I don't think much of the Belmont Road post office. It never seems to be open!0

It should because it's a busy enough location in the heart of East Belfast!"Well, we are a Christian country, it is an important part of our make-up and I don't see any reason to change." David Cameron0
