Would be a great wee money earner along there.

I know the lady who bought the newsagent further up said she had to close as Tesco took most of her business (papers/smokes etc) and also because she kept getting broken into so insurance was a nightmare.

If she'd known Tesco was closing she could have branched out into food and done a good trade!

Sorry, but saying that "Tesco took most of her business" is being a little bit dramatic and a little economical with the truth. Tesco and indeed Stewarts before it were in that location years before that particular woman took over that newsagents. If she took over ownership of the shop thinking she would be able to take on Tesco and win, then more fool her. That little shop ( I remember when it was called Bradens) survived for years because it was an old fashioned sweet shop. It survived when there was Stewarts/Tesco and 2 other newsagents to compete with. A new owner comes in, tries to change things and fails. You can't pin the blame at the door of Tesco.

I have been told the Co-Op is moving into the building vacated by Tesco, but given that there's already one on Connsbrook I would be surprised.

I see that there is a notice on Belmont Road premises from Tesco saying they have applied for liquar license for the premises. Wondering if they are reopening or maybe just as an off-license?

    Anyone know?
  • Dont know Avoniel, but Im glad someone has told me what it is - I sit every morning on the bus looking at the bits of paper from a distance wondering if it was a planning permission notice for 257 shoe box sized apartments!!!

Has anyone heard anything more on the Belmont Tescos...I really miss it!
  • The former Tesco Local on the Belmont Road is to reopen as a Tesco Express on 7th February! (I was told the date by one of the staff at the Express store in Ballyhack)

From what I can gather Tesco aren't opening any new Tesco Locals, their main store formats are now just Extra, Superstore, Express and Metro. So even though prices may be a few pence dearer than say the Connswater store, this is still really great news for the area. The Belmont Road just hasn't been the same since Tescos closed.

The pervious landlord wanted more rent and tesco walked. Since they moved out the landlord has went bankrupt and tesco now own the building.

Also the woman who took over the shop closed as she paid to much money for it and was robbed twice (FIGS) and had no insurance. She also nearly when bankrupt and just walked away.

    Really? I hadn't heard that.....
  • Incredibly, it seems the new Tesco is going to be smaller than before, the former off-licence part is being offered as a separate unit. As I'm a new member I'm not allowed to post links on this forum, but if you Google "TDK Commercial Property 4/5 Belmont Road" you'll find the listing.

On the brighter side, when I was walking past the other day I could see they've built a space for a cash machine. Finally, after all these years, the Belmont Road gets a second ATM!
  • Not sure what Coffeys is like. We use the one on the left hand side at the beginning of Holywood Rd at Holywood Arches and it is nothing short of superb, tbh !!:j

http://www.tdkproperty.com/property.php?id=40 Its hard to imagine what could fit in that space but I am sure it will be suitable for some business
