OK you tried a System Restore via Safe Mode with Command Prompt

At the C: prompt type rstrui.exe

    Restore to an earlier time

Let me know how you get on

    Regards

    I get an error saying'

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or HD controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

I do but I just can't find it. I think I'm gonna have to send off to Microsoft for a replacement.

Difficult if you cannot get into Safe Mode with CP and you have no XP CD

XP recovery console with following should bring it up: chkdsk /p/r

Try the same with UBCD and select Hard disk tools > diagnostic tools

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
What is the make/model of PC, there may be other recovery options.
You also need to be careful of your data - is it backed up - as a lot of recovery procedures will wipe your hard drive.
