Thankfully Em's legs are fine so she won't need escortingI can be assured she'll get the message across very fast if we don't get it right  :rotfl:

Hiphouse - Just wondered, with your friend breaking both wrists like this, when it's quietened down after the initial problem solving, it could be worth your friend asking about a bone density scan to see if that contributed to it, and maybe with treatment stops it's potential reoccurence.0

Hi IMD
It's all that sense we are talking :rotfl:Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
hiya dt are you midlands too?
No I'm North Wales the mountains have had plenty of snow but being a mile from the coast we have hardly had any but it is really icy.
I used to be in the Midlands I am a Brummie by origin but lived in Staffordshire until I left Uni when I moved to Wales just before the last bad winter here 1981/82

Hey just reading about your friend hiphouse, would picture cards be any use to them ? Im a support worker for people with learning disabilities and difficulties and we use these with the people who have little to no verbal communication. This may be easier to show your pal basic pictures to help get the essential things out of the way ie bathroom/food/etc until such time they can hold a pen ? Hope they are feeling alright otherwise0

A friend has fallen and broken both wrists. Her first language is sign language. The fractures mean she is now unable to communicate. We're hoping that once the pain is under control she'll be able to type messages on a laptop, though we appreciate this will be slow.
The question is does anyone know how someone in a hard cast can hold a pen - there's rather a lot of plaster between thumb and finger so that gripping a pen doesn't look likely.
Any ideas anyone has any ideas or suggestions about how we can go on from here I'd be delighted to know
Tricky...perhaps you could get her one of those really, really think pens to write with so she doesn't have to grip too hard? Like those 10 coloured ones everyone has as a child? Or maybe a marker pen...ooh, a chunky marker pen and a whiteboard for small messages that she doesn't have to keep looking for paper.Or perhaps someone could make her up some little flashcards for day-to-day things that she can flash when she needs them instead of having to write the same thing out over and over and over again. Or a combination of the two.
Hope there's a workable idea in all of that...Please call me 'Pickle'

Thanks for all the ideas Pickle and everyone else.
The plan has begun. Photos have been taken of various stuff that is used several times a day to create flashcards as Pania and Pickle suggested. At the moment this is all food and drink since Em will have no involvement in this so it's much easier to wave a photo of the cafetiere to let us know she wants a real coffee instead of having to drag us into the kitchen to point to the coffee and hope she doesn't end up with a cup of instant! Foodstuffs are now on the worktop - in pointing distance.
Photos will be taken over time as and when it's felt appropriate - Em will lead on this.
Em's cousin is providing assistance such as going to the toilet, getting ready for bed, bathing so the only sentence cards are for her deaf friends to say how she feels emotionally and whether she wants us to stay or leave (the P*** off card has already been laminated :T:rotfl:).
I don't think is going to be as complicated as we first feared.
Se: Good idea to check bone density, I'll pass that message on.
skint-spice: I've wracked my brains and I don't know what "that would be an eccumenical matter" impliesI know I'm going to feel REALLY silly when I find out
Thanks again for all your help. :A savingmore: I love this thread too!0 -
Hypno, I'm sorry for the major thread hijack this evening... I just didn't know where else to go. Should have asked first, apologies.
Good luck with the travel plans for DS in the morning.0
