I found it pretty useless for my family as it is not good for Scottish family

I presume youve found the Scotlandspeople web site which is excellent..?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Why not see if your local library has access. Mine does and it would be a good means to see if it is right for you. Doesn't cost a penny. You should also take advantage of any introductory offers.
  • My OH has done a lot of research using ancestry.co.uk but in conjunction with freebmd.org.uk and the familysearch site.

We have also upgraded the family tree software that we use, purchased via clubcard points (also available for purchase from amazon for £30) which gives 6 months ancestry which is possibly a good way to start.

Might be repeating what others have said but
    - find out as much as you can from freebmd first so that you are in a position to make the most of your subscription
    - take care on the familysearch site as some of the records are added by members and aren't always accurate.
    - We have found that some amatuer researchers will take the first piece of information found as gospel with the risk of getting it wrong whilst others are a lot more thorough - with experience you get the feel for which are which!

I found a few relatives via Ancestry (amongst others) but at a time when they gave out info more freely. Now they give very little without payment so I would try to sort out as much as you can that needs looking at and pay for one months subscription about £11. I don't find it much use now as I have gone quite some way back or they simply don't have records for regions I need but starting off it was great help. Do you have a Family History group near you, our local one allows free access to Ancestry. Also look at the Online Parish Clerks (counties) for the areas you want as they sometimes turn up info.

Hi, my subscription is due for renewal on Ancestry and was wondering if there were any deal about.

Also to note that it their newsletter they stated that the 1911 census was coming in 2010 as part of the membership, so I really want to renew.

I used Scotland's people for the Scottish side of my family. But I only buy credits which enable you to access births, marriages and deaths and census info. You have to spend all your credits in one day though and if you don't you lose them. Minimum cost I think is £5.

    Has anyone tried this site
Is it worth the £83.40 annual fee?

Don't know if its been mentioned already but there's a site called Curious Fox which is a village by village search tool. If you know the name of a village/town where your ancestors lived you can post queries about them and others who have info on them can contact you. Thats the theory but I haven't crossed with anyone regarding my own family. Its just a matter of time I hope.

Its brilliant. They recently added the London Metropolitan baptisms, marriages and burials which has saved me literally hundreds of pounds in certificates.

Go through quidco.com to get 25% cash back on a sub.

Use the 14 day free trial to get a taste of it.

Buy a 2010 Family tree maker programme currently £30 on amazon and get 6 months basic sub included.

Rince, if you let your sub lapse (delete your payment details from your account) then you normally get a "come back to us with 20% discount" email about 4 weeks later.

Just used my 14 days basic sub and found that after the 1841 census I needed access to christening records etc for which a premium membership is needed.
  • I have been a member for 3 years now, I hang around for the offers. Last time was a good deal by the New Zeland Ancestry (so don't just look at the UK pricing) that included access to the English data. Looking around now for another deal, so I am off to check out the Tesco Deals suggestion as I have loads of vouchers to spend.
I want to be credit card and loan free by Christmas 2010
