Mum taught me to crochet years ago and over that time I've made many blankets and even baby cardi's.
I thought I'd buy the mag to see what patterns are in it and had a go at the square. I've completed it and am now working on the scarf but I have to say that the square is not the easiest thing to begin with. It took me three goes to get it looking right. I think it's too much swopping from one stitch to another for a first project. I haven't watched the DVD though so maybe I've missed an exercise that will help a complete beginner get their head around the stitiches.
  • Sueb your correct the dvd didn't demonstrate the treble stitch so I'm having to find a tutorial on the internet.

What do you think would be a good beginners stitch to make squares for a blanket?

You must be really quick to have done all that crocheting!!!

The treble stitch is at the back of the mag and is my favorite stitch. When you use it the work grows very quickly.
This link, while not a video, shows how to do it quite well. http://www.rucraft.co.uk/technique_crochet_treblestitch.php
As for squares....A square made with double will be do-able but slow. It will however be good practice. Learning the treble will open up new horizons and will enable you to make the obligatory granny squares. I do love doing these. They are incredibly quick to make but once when I was pregnant I got a little carried away and only stopped going round when I had no more wool in the house...I think it was a double bed sized blanket by then. It was soooooo not taseful in the colour department :D

This link also has a video which shows nicely how a treble is made.

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I'm willing to try help if anyone needs it :D

After walking to 4 newsagents this morning and all having sold out of the art of crochet, I then phoned adsa and morrisons and was told they were out of stock. Tesco said they had some so sent dh to get it as bit too snowy to drive but he phoned and said they had sold out. Luckily for me he stopped off in another little shop on his way home and got one!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait for kids to go to bed so i can start crocheting!!! :)

Couldn't find the crochet magazine anywhere - it had either sold out or wasn't stocked. :( Didn't realise it would be this popular!
  • Managed to get the last one in my local rs mcolls, day off work tomorrow so guess what i will be doing, had a quick look through mag , love the colour of the pink wool, don't think i will buy it regularly at £2.99 a week but 99p is cracking value for the first one, happy crocheting, hope i can get the hang of it
