A bookmark I made last night
I found a leftover amigurumi head in my sewing box and decided to try something different. I crochet her some hair (turned out a bit old fashioned if you ask me) and then I did a long strip of double crochet and I then sew on a pair of amigurumi feet
The result is not fantastic but it is the first item I have made without using a pattern to guide me.

  • Hello everyone! I have been following this thread with interest for the past few weeks since I decided it was time to take up a useful hobby and took up crochet.

I'm still learning and not very good, I can now crochet a mean triple crochet square though, but am really struggling over the granny squares. I just can't get the hang of them at all.

I don't want to keep buying the art of crochet mags because of the cost, so I've just ordered the happy hooker to continue my crochet education.

I hope to one day make something decent enough to share :D

I want to make the cushion cover in the latest issue of AOC my first project but I don't want to fork out for the Debbie Bliss yarn stated - can anyone more knowledgable than me about these things recommend a cheaper alternative?

If you look at the yarn stated it should tell you what size needles it knits on and the total length of the ball. Then you can look for something similar. When substituting yarn it's best to do a tension swatch to check that it knits to the same tension as the original (this info will also be on the wool ball band). You can also google the wool, most on-line shops state this information on their sites!

personaly, for a cushion cover I wouldn't bother to swatch as it's not going to be the end of the world if it's a bit smaller or bigger than intended. Anyway, i hate swatching

Do save the hat that you made too small, I'm sure it will fit a dolls head of some sort. :) Look forward to see some pics
  • Hi Everyone
I am a newbee, been inspired by your work and taken up crochet myself! I am addicted after a couple of weeks. Made Lucys stars and snowflakes, a pair of ripple wrist warmers and some mobile phone cases! Very proud of them too. I have one massive granny square too! Will try to post some piccies when I work out how to !! Thanks again for the inspiration all.
  • Hello all,

I just wanted to add to this thread. 10 days ago I couldn't crochet but I bought the 'art of crochet' mag to learn, I found the magazine awful and just couldn't get it and almost gave up. Then someone recommended me Stitch n !!!!! the Happy Hooker book (under 7 from amazon) and it is amazing, in 1 week I have gone from rubbish to being able to crochet, read patterns, I have made a lip balm holder, a purse and I am 25% through my first clutch bag.
I would totally recommend that book, don't bother with the mag. Also it is more MSE as it is cheaper than the sub to the mag.

    Hope that helps
