edit - for some reason the page ain't working.

it is a tick box option when you apply for a main account and if you are not successful for that you wish to be considered for the Instant Plus
  • Hi Folks,

Well I decided to apply for the "Abbey Account" Online and have been given one of them really handy to use everywhere Electron Cards...

Reading the Forums it has been said that some point in December the Abbey would not be sending Electron Cards anymore just Full Auth Visa Debit Cards which would be fine for me...

I did apply for the Account a good week after the Date and been declined an upgrade to a Visa Debit Card by Telephone Bank (They said they would Check, but I don't know if it was just an Internal Serach or a Credit Search but they didn't say anything)..

They advised me to write to my local branch to try and appeal this.. Sent a letter but not heard anything back as yet (Was sent very close to the Christmas Last Posting Date) so I guess its stuck in someones In tray for the time being..

Would do you people think? Any Buzz words I need to give to get this Full Auth Visa Debit Card or am I just stuffed and close the account down?

I thought all was great when they said I had Got the Abbey Account!! :) - Just not the Visa Electron Part :(

I said No to having a Basic Bank Account on the Online Application so I am just so confused with them...

    Thanks for any input!!
santander are now no longer issuing you with the electron cards! its now a online debit its called!
with regards to getting the full debit card its the system which defines whether you can get it or not, the advisors are only able to upgrade to what the system allows them to do! i hope this helps any other questions let me know i have insider info!

santander debit cards that start with 4547 are they 'online debit' or the full offline MFC debit card

Cards starting 4547 are all full MFC debit cards, Electron cards started 4917 and I - believe - the new debit online cards issues start 4757 (though I've yet to actually see one in the flesh).

An update .. Well my girlfriend just received her visa debit with santander, with her insta plus account.

At first I thought it was the electron card that was sent, as it was not embossed but flat like electron cards, but underneath the visa sign it was written debit and not electron !!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek:

so the santander online visa debit cards (the full auth one) are flat (unembossed), unlike the other banks , just written debit instead of electron on the card

This card type is very common really, that is what the PayPal prepaid card is and if you google "unembossed visa" you will see the US and Canada only just got them in the last decade. There is also the argument that there is no need to raised characters anymore as everything is done electronically and even when an organisation has to resort to the old manual imprinter when systems fail ALL transactions must then be authorised the floor limit becomes zero.

Can I ask what the first 4 digits of the card number are, as Barclaycard have a table to say which card type this conforms too (the PayPal card says debit on it but is actually numbered as an electron card), cheers.

I received a new electron card on my current account a few days ago, So i don't think this is accurate with regards to them not issuing them anymore. Its exactly the same as the old abbey one execept it says santander on it now starts 4917

The card starts with 4757, and looks absolutely similar to the picture of the card that has been uploaded by TOE-JAM(unembossed), the only difference being the starting 4 digits and it says 'Debit' instead of electron on the card.

However the visa card which I have got with my full current account with santander is 'Embossed' (Raised digits) and starts with '4547' and also has the debit on it.

so am guessing mine is then the full offline debit while my girlfriend's is the online debit, which I think they will now issue with their insta plus , and other basic accounts.

Do you have the full current account with them ?

The reason I am asking this is when I tried to open a current account with them, got refused and opened their insta plus account with the electron card, however got upgraded after 6 months to their current account, and the advisor said the system says I can have their MFC full visa debit card.

so if you don't mind me saying this then i suggest you try for the full offline debit, if you indeed have the full current account, as i think after santander stopped doing the cheque guarantee card they must have relaxed their criteria for the full visa debit card, unless you are happy with you electron !!
