I know some would say this was morally wrong, but at least the little thing wasn't suffering any more.

Legally wrong maybe, definitely not morally wrong.

Phone the RSPCA back and tell them you have seen a caring young policeman trying to stop the poor cat's misery. That should do it.

My experience of London RSPCA has been rubbish as well. Unless they have Rolf Harris and a film crew with them, forget it.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

docats eat dog food? might put a bowl out in the side bit by our back gate for him and hope he's the one to get it.
    what a horrible situation :(

yes cats will eat dog food, but in the long term it's not good for them because it lacks an essential nutrient that cats need (can't remember which one) but this poor animal's starving, so any food it gets is going to be good for it. put a bowlful out :)

RSPCA? ... my daughter knew this 'boy' she was at school with, he'd just left school & got his own flat, was unemployed & spent all his Giro on dope (I've no problem with productive individuals smoking it btw) he couldn't even afford to feed himself & for some inexplicable reason had decided to aquire a dog & two kittens. the animals were always hungry, the kittens' litter tray was a disgusting unattended mess (why do people keep litter trays in kitchens???) & they were generally neglected because he was too stoned/lazy to look after to them

she agonized for ages about whether to report him, & eventually did ... the RSPCA came out, inspected the 'situation' & reported back to her that there was no problem!

I'm not being very helpful here, just sympathising with your experience of RSPCA ... the previous posters do have some potentially useful suggestions though

I agree, they are a waste of space. I used to donate £5 a month years ago as I had several rescue animals & felt others deserved the chance mine had. When they did nothing about the poor dog that was left in a garden all day, every day without water, shelter or food I decided that I could no longer suppoert them.

Before everybody keeps having a pop at the RSPCA i can tell you the problem is underfunding, for an entirely charity funded organisation they do the best they can but have extremely limited resources. They also have the law controlling there actions and are extremely restricted in what they can do.They do a hell of a lot of good work as well but a cat up a tree? come on guys be reasonable, and a run over animal? thats a job for a vet or crematorium not a cruelty service. My late father was an rspca inspector for many years and did save/help hundreds of animals during his career, but if an animal is left unattended in a house all they can do is poke food through the letterbox to feed it, they cant go around breaking into peoples houses all the time because the cat is home alone, im sure there is a lot wrong with the rspca and a lot that needs changing but if we all stop supporting them who will rescue the really sick animals?
lol, cat stuck up a tree, if your that worried buy a ladder and get it down yourself

I might just buy one to help you down off your high horse.

The cat was four months old. I had already tried to get up the tree and injured myself doing so. It was fireworks night. If you dont think it is cruel to leave a kitten up a tree on that particular night, then shame on you. This tree is higher than the rooftops round here. Not your bulk standard apple tree that is easy to climb. The cat was mewing helplessly up there and was clearly terrified. All we could do was stand and listen. People went in and shut their windows because they couldnt bear to hear it. If the RSPCA had sent someone to look, then they could have called the fire brigade who would have had big enough ladders to get in the tree. As it was, the FB wanted £500 to come out if the neighbour called them. They could not afford that. They would have willingly paid something to the RSPCA though to come and help but they just were not interested.

And I'm sure like a lot of charities the "suits" do very well for themselves first out of the underfunded trough.

My son 'found' 3 kittens a few months ago. We boxed them up next morning (after they peed and pooed my front porch to death) and took them to the local RSPCA unit 5 mins drive from us. I left them in the car with said (upset) son and went in to the reception.
They were totoally unhelpful to the situation. t 1st they were adament they were full and could take no more animals, which I appreciate they must have an upper limit. I then asked where could I take them or of another sanctury. I wasn't about to take them home again, I have a dog and don't want 3 cats. they were extremely ignorant and were shrugging shoulders. So what was I do to? not there problem! so I said yes it was as I would be leaving the box of kittens outside there door as I left if they didn't either take them from me or tell me where I could take them.
They came to the car and took them.

I later rang the same RSPCA shelter to find out how they were (aninimously) to enquire whether they had any kittens in, I was told they had none but if only we had rung this morning they had 3 beautiful ones dropped off but had now been rehomed!
So for 3/4 hours in the shelter I wonder how much they got in the rehome fee!
I also found out from a friend there is another shelter 2 mins down the road that takes all animals, how was I not redirected to that 1?

Oh well all this has left me in a quandary as I want to give to a few more charities and was considering the RSPCA,already give to CPL. Not sure what to do now. Any links giving advice about most proactive charities etc?
