I have my birth certificate, how do I tell if it's a shortened version (or not)?

A short one has your name, date and place of birth and is a small square one.

A full certificate has your parents details on it as well and is A4 sized.
  • And a copy costs about 7-14 quid if u need one !

OK, thanks. Looks like mine is a full one then, though it's not A4 sized. I'd not appreciated that you could get birth certificates without parents details.

What a load of B*ll**ks even when you register a baby you get the short one FREE and you have to pay for a full one so it seems bazzaar that you have to have a full one as I bet 99% of people don't have one.

I think you'll find the reason for this is the Asylum and Immigration Act. I do this as part of my job and its an absolute pain. The only documents we accept are either a full passport which must be in date or a full birth certificate together with confirmation of your NI number such as P45 or P60 etc. All documents must be the originals and the future employer keeps copies. We dont have a copier at work so we have to ask the candidates to bring photocopies and the originals with them. We ask for these docs when coming to interview - they can have the copies back under the 'data protection act' if they are not successful in their application. Companies are charged huge fines for employing illegals and this is another step they have taken to protect themselves. If an employee turns out to be an illegal immigrant then as long as they can show due diligence then they would not be prosecuted. These documents are proof of that. I recently had a lovely lady who had a full birth certificate but her parents separated when she was a baby and her mum remarried and her step-dad adopted her. She had a passport in her new name but a birth certificate in her old name. She had lost her adoption certificate and had to apply to the courts then to the office of national statistics for a full certificate- this took 6 weeks in total. I agree its complete pants and its so embarassing and personal especially in the latter case but I think you will find that the majority of employers are adopting this. The registrar offices must be raking in a fortune for the demand for full birth certificates. The other thing is most people who dont get the jobs dont ask for their copies back so therefore you have loads of passport and birth certificate information if you were unscrupulous. Not much help but I think you will find thats the way the world is moving now.

I always get the full version when you register new baby with shortend, because that time is cheaper. If you get shortend and go to get full version later sometime then you have to pay more.

Myself and my partner have hit so many brick walls here in Leeds through this ...so off putting ...

I don't understand why both of you are "hitting brick walls"? Is this something that keeps happening? All you have to do is take a few moments out of your lives to pop down the Register Office. As you've discovered it will be very hard to find work if you won't provide the right paperwork so bite the bullet, get it over with and the problem disappears.

I had to do the same last year when I started work and I don't see what all the fuss is about. It's a very trivial hurdle to cross, personally I was grateful that they even gave me an interview and I'd have told them my blood group if they'd asked  Nowadays I spend my time copying other people's passports, and none of them complain either. They are glad to do whatever it takes to find a job.

Has now moved from Bow Lane to down on the Docks. Took me 45 mins to find it last week. Turn into Chain Caul Way (end near the docks) and it's first right ( 15 yards). They will print it out for you there and then, but only if you can get there before 1pm.
    good luck,

  • We had to do this recently for our children's passports. It cost us £7 each for a full Birth certificate including our details on it too. When we eventually found the office, at least they gave them to us there & then!
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)
