Also had to subject myself to a credit check (it's for a position within a banking group).
I can see why a Lancashire lad is p***ed off; it's hard enough living on benefits, but then to be told that you have to pay for either a full birth certificate (when you already have a short one that confirms your nationality) or new passport in order to apply for jobs. What do you go without that week so that you can pay for that? Breakfasts? Dinners?
Exactly ......... well said yes it is hard enough to survive and when your 45 lol no one wants to employ you anyhow ! I could leave these kids behind in respect of customer service but i dont get a chance ! Hey ho ......0 -

Your children will be able to use them for the rest of their lives, they'll need them to renew their passports and get jobs when they grow up0 -
I didn't know this rule had come about, (went to live in Spain in 2004) but what's the problem with getting a birth certificate? You can do it by post if you can't get to the office, or even apply online I think. Igf you go to the office you can normally get it there and then.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Oh the headaches of birth certificates!! 4 years ago my partner asked his ex to sort out passports for the 2 children. She had no objections to this and we thought it would be easiest as the children live with her.
Nothing happened after 2 years so we said that we would do it on their behalf but that we'd need their birth certificates. Another 2 years later and she finally got round to sending them to us.
We get all the passport documentation ready and then guess what, the stupid rules had changed and we needed FULL birth certificates.!!! Grrr!
As you say A LANCASHIRE LAD, they then charge you for this. We sent off a cheque and the birth certificates arrived and we thought that at least we could hang onto them in case they were needed for anything else in the future.
We sent them off to the Passport service only for them to be returned to their mum as this is where the kids live. I was livid. We'd paid for those birth certificates and now would never see them again.
I agree that there is often red tape but of course employers want to know who they are employing. My OH works for an agency and after being with them for over 3 years they asked him last week to take his passport/ID to prove who he was!!! Now THAT is ludicrous!!!0 -
Blair's Britain. And whoever said we don't live in a Police State? Gone are the days where you go into work 9-5, do a job, come home, watch tele for a bit.
As Basil Fawlty said, "Orders!! Orders must be obeyed at all times and without question!"
World's gone mad.0 -

I go out to work during the day and watch telly in the evening (I do other stuff too) and so does just about everyone I know. If the only thing stopping me from getting a job and watching Coronation Street was a piddling bit of paper, I'd blame myself and not Blair.0 -
