You ALWAYS get the full version? How many kids have you had?

You should be thankful you arent trying to come to work for my employers, not only would you need your birth cert or passport but you also have to consent to a full credit history and criminal record check in additional to full references (personal and employers) for the last 6 years. Slightest mark on your file or if one of the references is not returned means you cant get a job with us. (thankfully I joined before these rules were brought in but have had to sign up to random credit and criminal checks)

I'm curious now as to why there needs to be two versions (shortened & full), does anybody know?

  • You can usually use your driving licence to prove your identification on this. All agencies that I know of will use them, as it gives place of birth too. I have just got a job that has to be compliant with both the immigration act and the FSA (read above post about full credit check, reference etc and know how much red tape there is there!!) and they were happy to accept it as my identification and right to work in the UK. So if you have a new style license dont pay the £7!

Credit history? That's a bit extreme! Who do you work for, if you don't mind my asking?
I always thought short birth certificates were the kind usually issued when you buy one from the registry office, unless you specifically ask for a full one and pay more for it. £14ish is a lot of money when you're unemployed. I can't think of any good reason why a short one along with proof of NI number should not be accepted. I've only ever been asked to produce one for job appliactions when enhanced disclosure is required, e.g. if the job involves working with children.
I once had a council application form where the medical section was quite detailed and asked a lot of questions that I didn't think were any of their business, including if and when I last had a smear test! There was a warning that all questions must be answered for the appliaction to be considered. I complained about it, and on the advice of the CAB suggested that it could be considered sex discrimination to ask that of female applicants when there was not anything like an equivalent question for males, and I heard no more about it, but the next time I applied for a job with the council, I was glad to see that the form had been changed.

I work for a banking group - whilst it isnt applicable to my job the theory is that members of staff have to be whiter than white. It is basically that how can you make negative comments about a customers credit/ spending etc if your finances are in a worse situation than theirs.

Crimal checks are obvious given the possibility to commit fraud.

The ever wonderful NHS has had this birth cert etc policy for a few years now, however for the last job i applied for, i gave them a short cert but valid passport too. also had to have CRB check which took forever. could not start job til CRB came back and they took 8 weeks.

it all seems to be too much red tape to me, esp as this time i had finished previous post (also in NHS) and was waiting to start new job. you would think that being in the same company it would be easier to be moved around jobwise but it aint so.

no worries we all get there in the end and i agree that the cost for these certs is outrageous. i had to get full kids ones for their passports last year (lost originals in a move) better part of £30 gone for 2 brats passports and its not like i can use certs again!!!

want to put smiley in but cant find em

I've never had a birth certificate, no I am not being funny, suspect Mother disposed of it, I was adopted by my stepfather and have an adoption certificate instead which is accepted as proof of identity, don't know about England but in Scotland a 'copy' of a birth certificate is not recognised by official bodies apparently, always seemed a bit back to front to me so I paid for a copy of my birth certificate a couple of years ago thinking I may be able to use it but no, it is clearly stamped on it that it is not a legal document for identification purposes so back to using the adoption cert. At least you are lucky in that your copy is recognised as a legal document. It's a funny old world and pretty scre*ed up legally.

I have always paid for the 'full' certificate for my lads as well as the freebie and then I have used the freebie whenever I've had to send off the original for benefit claims etc. Can't remember what we had to do for passports, but at least I still had the freebies (yes they've always been sent back so far!)

A short one has your name, date and place of birth and is a small square one.

A full certificate has your parents details on it as well and is A4 sized.

I was born in '63, my birth certificate is a full one and is not A4. Its a long thinnish one which states my mother and father and both their occupations place of birth and my full name, oh and the date i was born and the date registered with 2 registrars signatures. My sons main one is A4 and his shortened one is i think A5 which doesn't show he has a father.

I've just been to an interview where I was required to bring either a current passport or full birth certificate - along with other forms of ID.

Also had to subject myself to a credit check (it's for a position within a banking group).

I can see why a Lancashire lad is p***ed off; it's hard enough living on benefits, but then to be told that you have to pay for either a full birth certificate (when you already have a short one that confirms your nationality) or new passport in order to apply for jobs. What do you go without that week so that you can pay for that? Breakfasts? Dinners?
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
